First, thanks to Anthony for helping me retrieve my log on information.  I've updated my profile and as I was wondering if I could change my password to one of my choice ?
I clearly have trouble remembering a password that's given to me so I know it'd be easier if I just used one that I can remember instead of having to write it down on a piece of paper.

Can I just go to the "Password" field and put a new password in there and be good to go or will I screw things up again ?

Click on the "My Profile" link at the top of the page. Then, click on the "» View/Update Profile «" link that is on the top-left of the screen, just under the blue bar. The fifth line under the big blue section is to change your password.
