5 speed transmission fluid
« on: June 02, 2016, 01:52:29 AM »

I just bought some Valvoline high performance limited slip 80w 90 gear oil. It says Differential: API service GL-4, GL-5. Non-Synchronized Manual Transmission: API service GL-5. Does this mean this gear oil is only for non synchronized transmissions or do our Capris fall under API service GL-4 GL-5. Sorry for the super noob question but I don't wanna hurt my baby! Thanks

These trannys typically use ATF, however, I have to use 75W90 to minimize leaking though the shifter seal.  I lost one transmission when, after a clutch replacement the mechanic used ATF without my knowledge and it leaked out in a week, crashing the tranmission.

The designers of our 5 speed trannys is mazda, and their manuals specify the use of a GL-4  type gear oil.  So the oil you bought will work just fine.

Yes, gl4 or a dexronII ATF. I use ATF in my gtx's with no issues. There are some other cocktails used like redline and a pint of their shockproof. Many gtx guys are using it with great success.
