Best fluid/oil for 5 speed xr2 trans?
« on: January 27, 2015, 03:28:19 PM »

topped off my trans with ATF about 4000 miles ago, but ive been hearing from some people to run 75-90 gear oil, my dad said ATF is fine but id rather get a second opinion. Car has 94k on it, sometimes hard to shift from 1st to 2nd, but never grinds or pops i think thats just the linkage or something because 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th feel fine.

The manual says use only Mercon. TSB out says use only Mercon which is Ford part# xt-2-qtx which qtx stands for quarts and ddx stands for 55 gal drums.
Do not use the later Mercon V. It's not interchangeable by that TSB.

It doesn't say anything about gear oil. That's old school. It was about then when Ford started using regular Mercon ATF in their manual trannies.

It takes 3.4 its. To check the level you remove the speedometer gear. Clean it off, put back in like a dipstick and pull it back out. Top of the gear is the low mark. The line right above that is the full mark.

Pennzoil has a relatively new product called Sycromesh that's specifically designed for these types of transmission.  I recently put it in mine and it works great.  I've been told that if you have gear meshing problems (crunching) the 75-90W helps that, but don't have any personal experience with it.
