EL Prototypes chip
« on: December 05, 2009, 04:20:00 PM »

Hi fellow Capri lovers - Just got my hands ($75 off ebay) on a EL Prototypes chip for my ECU have any of you guys used one of these before I would assume it would be nearly identical to one of Rocketmans chips. Also wondering what octane fuel they are tuned for as (in Australia) I use 98 octane.

there ya go, is that what you got ???

if you send corksport your ecu, the chip you got is what they soldier in ....

assuming its what you got...

usually you send them parameters (like rpm limit, top speed info, Ect...) and they tune it to your needs...

in my case its tuned for a 7500 rpm redline and 17psi...

thats kinda race only, but i have it set up right ..

if i were to build up my valvetrain, i could then utilize the extra 500 rpm of revs.. but with the mostly stock head that im running, i wouldnt want to bounce it off it too many times...

my first engine i had in this xr2, floated a valve in a highway race and completely melted a piston on me... so now im extra careful how high i rev the car on my nicer motor...

ive had my new engine ( 9.2-1 compression N/A block) running a mitsubishi 14b turbo, up to 23psi before the knock was severe, and it was out of fuel...
(i also run a walbro 255lph pump, and dsm 450cc injectors)
so it will still provide enough fuel to push id say 21psi before its completely out of whack and your running on injector flow alone....

oh and as for fuel, i run 93 as a daily driver but mine loves the 110 race gas at the dragstrip..
so id say you could run 20psi boost with proper support mods (pump, injectors, front mount, turbo,BOV, Ect..)no problem on 98 octane..
id say on a vj-14 turbo, prolly 17psi (maybe 18 with a FMIC on a cool night) (vj-11 id say 18-19)
i wouldnt push over 18 on the stock injectors...

if your chiping your ECU id put in a walbro 255lph low pressure pump in at the same time....

Its just a chip I bought off eBay that somebody purchased new and didnt install , but I will be installing mine with a IC socket so it can be removed if need be. On a side note I'm pretty sure the EPROM (in your photo) needs to have a sticker over the window to keep UV light out so it doesnt erase itself when exposed to light.
I have had my capri (92 Clubsprint) for many years and will be slowly 'hotting' it up a little but dont want to spend too much $$$ on it as its seen better days and worth bugger all.

I'm thinking about hybriding the turbo after I install the chip with a bigger compressor wheel. I understand you (US) guys use the VJ11 compressor , I'm assuming it is basically a bolt in mod IE. VJ14 comp removed and replaced with a VJ11.
Yes a Walbro fuel pump would be good insurance if planning to run some extra boost.
Also what size exhaust do you guys run that have similar mods?.
I would love to ditch the alloy pipe that feeds into the TB/intake and replace it with a carbon fibre piece which would stay way cooler than the aluminium piece of crap.Has anybody done this yet?.

i personally dont run vj turbos anymore..
but yes a vj-14/vj-11 hybrid is popular for the b6t..
im running the mitsu 14b with dsm 450cc injectors..

I have installed the chip , just soldered it onto the circuit board and didn't bother about the IC socket as it is a double-sided board (HTF do you solder the top side of the board with a socket?).
Tweaked the boost to 15PSI (not game on any higher with VJ14) and goes heaps better .
The flat spot higher up in the rev range has gone , now spins the wheels if you plant the foot in second gear on a slightly damp road
Well worth the $75

With the socket you rely on good wetting to form a miniscus on both sides of the board. Flux and a clean board, clean parts, & fresh solder are important there. The holes are also usually jacketed with an insert to help with flow

I will soon be offering Rocketchips as a DIY chip/socket combo incase anyone is interested.

I decided against offering them that way. I tried for a while and had way too many issues with DIY customer installation.
