Title: 1991 Capri non-turbo want to put in turbo motor

Hi,

I am new to this forum so please forgive my ignorance.  I recently purchased a 1991 Capri non-turbo and I am thinking of purchasing a turbo motor to build out of the car and swap.  The big question I have is do I need to swap the transmission as well or will the turbo motor bolt right up?  I have the transmission with the hydraulic clutch and I prefer that over a clutch cable.  I am pretty sure I have to swap the motor and the ECU...but I don't know if the transmissions are the same.  I also have a great deal of play in the linkage to the transmission and I was wondering if that is normal?  I just sold a 1994 mazda protege and the linkage on it seemed much better, not as much slop.

First off, welcome to TeamCapri!

The linkage is likely due to worn shifter & linkage bushings. This is a common but easily fixed issue

Regarding the turbo "swap": You *could* put a turbo motor in with your existing trans, yes it'll bolt up, but the stock N/A trans isn't built for the torque(the XR2 has a stronger transmission and axles designed to minimize torque steer). Especially if you plan on pushing more boost.
The bare minimum you'd need:
Turbo, turbo manifold, injectors, VAF, engine harness, distributor, knock box, and some sort of intercooler either OEM or aftermarket. And probably a good aftermarket clutch


There's a search function on this forum, the turbo conversion has been discussed plenty. I have performed it before, it's involved but do-able. But you basically need an entire XR2 as a donor to "do it right" so the whole "Is it worth it, or should I just buy an XR2?" issue comes into play.

To be honest, the cable clutch in the capri feels VERY similar to hydraulic clutched cars I've driven, it's pretty dang close to the 5 speed the 2.0L escort's get.  Cable does not mean it requires any extra effort, it actually seems to require less effort to me.
