Cooling Fan Problem
« on: May 09, 2012, 01:42:00 PM »

My cooling fan does not appear to be coming on.

My 91 N/A has 134000 on it.  Runs great, but the dang cooling fan does not seem to be coming on.  The engingine seems to run about 2/3 to 3/4 up on standard gauge but has not gone redline or even to top end of Hot white line.

My wife's 93 N/A fan runs properly so I know mine should run the same.

I've reviewed previous posts and tried several of the tests and tricks.  Ignition on, remove spade fitting at end of thermostat housing and fan should come on RIGHT?  Wrong, but I do hear the relay tripping on and off when I remove and plug in the spade fitting.

I thought it was fan but I jumpered the fan to the battery and it runs fine.

Tried cleaning fittings as suggested in one post but nada.

Any suggestions?

See if there is a fuse blown somewhere. If not i'd check the relay terminals for corrosion

You need to shoot the power going to the relay. If you got power there then the relay is bad of a bad wire going to the fan. If there is no power then you can follow that back and see where its losing the power at.

You can also jumper the relay. I bypasses mine so it would always be on. But shooting the voltage at the relay is where you need to start. Power should be there when key is turned to start...

I assume we are talking about the relay on the inner corner of the drivers side fender wall next to the overflo tank?

Yes...that is the one..I ran a wire from the hot wire to the one that went to the fan. These cars run a bit hot anyways & add in the AZ heat..I needed as much help as possible.

you may have done this test too, but out of curiosity

turn on the AC while engine is running..
the fan runs 100% while AC is on.

this just helps pinpoint the true problem a little further.
