What would you keep? Parting out is such sweet sorrow.
« on: April 26, 2016, 09:54:02 PM »

I recently bought a non turbo with a hard top and a practically brand new convertible top. I plan to junk the car (it has over 200k miles)so the question is, what's worth the time taking off the car before it gets dumped? In the alternative, if anyone wants it, runs and you can have it before I take screwdriver and wrench to it for $750. It's a red 1991 with a manual trans. I live in Maryland in the Washington DC burbs.

Yeah, I didn't give but $500 for mine and wouldn't take $2000 for it.  Wish it was't so far away..

I know.....but - Some cars are just in such bad shape, that they must die so that others may live....

I understand that, but for Gods sake it has a new Top, and from what it sounds like its completely fine. Thats like parting out my Capri with 68k just cause, it makes no sense when it may be easier to keep the car on the road. I could understand if he said the thing was about to fall apart because of rust or a crash.

Was gonna say, just because it has over 200k miles doesn't make it junk unless the body is totally shot. Any photos of the car in its current condition?

True, nonetheless, my personal limit on my cars has been the 200k mark. Almost all big 3 automaker cars are not worth the constant upkeep once they approach that mark - at least in the north. I have only owned GM and Ford products, and my dad was a Buick mechanic and my father-in-law was a Ford factory worker, but I have seen that they just don't give the kind of reliability and corrosion resistance that I see out of my neighbors Hondas and Toyotas. Maybe I would consider some of them worth relying on at 200k, but not most Ford products, but then, my Capri is my daily driver and it has to give me 50 miles a day or I have to find something that will.

While we are on the subject, If anyone wants some inexpensive XR2's, how does 2 for $1000 sound? I saw this when searching nationally on CL:
http://evansville.craigslist.org/cto/5540740782.html

I have to admit, if I had a big barn, that would be a steal just for the parts involved! But that's getting back to the question that was asked. Should these be fixed or parted out?

Our Capris are mostly made of Mazda parts and in my opinion are some of the most reliable/cost efficient vehicles out there due to their basic and simple design.  I redid the entire front suspension and brakes on my Capri for less than the price of one strut for my Cadillac.

My first car, 86 Mazda 323, had 268K on it when I got it and sold it to a friend at around 307K and one of my coworkers has an 88 mazda B2000 as a DD and he’s about to roll 400K.  IMHO high miles don't mean much on these cars.

Toyota and Honda they've got problems too, My mom had a Camry and it was a total rust magnet and Honda got slapped with lawsuits for making odometers that read fast to make customers believe they lasted longer than they really were.

I have to agree with the others that unless it’s rusted out or it was in a collision, why would you part it out?

All valid points Chris. One more reason might be that parts are getting hard to find, even though I'm pretty good at it. Our turbos can't be rebuilt anymore, for example, there are still brand new complete units available for about $900, but the cartridge would be inexpensive if it were still available.

What? I'm taking mine to a shop in Sacramento that already gave me a rather nice quote on doing it. Are you saying that rebuild kits aren't readily available?

WARNING:
IF I COME OFF AS A DICK SORRY, I DONT MEAN TO OFFEND

Im kinda sick of the parts are rare BS everyone says, unless its body parts everything from our engines to electronical can be found from Escorts, Mazdas 323s, Proteges, Mustang(Items like door pull, and switches), and finally Miatas all share parts with this car. Its not like it has some unique engine or anything like that. Unless your interiors trashed are the cars been in a wreck you cant complain on lack of parts. i find it to be an excuse a good majority of Capri owners use just because their cheap ass' not saying you are. You also get what you give out, when it comes to a car if you do all preventative mataneince, and give the car love its going to stay almost the same as when it came from the factory.
A good example is my Capri it has 68k miles now, and has had 11 owners amazing right? Anyway it was ratty as hell when i got it, the car had been in a collision, was leaking oil the clutch was going out. All i had to do was go down to the auto parts store order some new gaskets, change all tubing, and replace my battery to get it running like new. Samething with the accident bit, all i had to do was stitch the pannel back together, so i could mold it back together with bondo. Now for all intense and purposes my cars back to new spec sense im repainting it. The part that had been in a accident and was the front bumper, it also threw my pop-ups out of wack and bent the panel between the turn signals in the front.
