Boost Gauge
« on: June 22, 2005, 07:52:00 PM »

Hey all, I just bought and temporarily insalled an Autometer boost gauge. I was suprised how accurate the stock gauge is (its dead on righ up to 15 PSI)

I'm going on vacation next week and when I get back I plan to purchase a pillar pod and an Air/Fuel ratio gauge to keep my boost gauge company...

Can you post exactly (steps, locations, parts list, etc) what was involved in adding the a/f gauge? I'm still having problems with my car (since Jan), have tried everything electrical and now believe it may be air leaks... current theory is a leak in the intake system causing the car to run badly (rich/lean, i dunno) and think this may help in diagnosis.

I most likely don't want permenant, so anything temp would be cool. not knowing where/if a leak is, probably closest to the spark plugs or in the wells may be the best place to look? I donno what it even reads...

Thanks,

JJ

You tap into the wire coming off the oxygen sensor on your exhaust manifold, then you just have a switched 12volts and a ground.About checking the intake,is it an n/a or an xr2?

Yea, he's right about the wiring for the A/F gauge. The hardest part is finding a place for the wire to go thru the firewall (i reccomend putting it thru next to the a/c drainage hose)

And about your car, perhaps if its an N/A, perhaps its the pipe that goes to the throttle body from the air box. My parts car had a bad seal where it joins the throttle body.

Thanks for the help. I went to the site Dean in the capri yahoo group posted about gauges... only ones I saw were in the 60-100 range... I'm hoping to get a cheap viable setup for about 25 bucks... possible?

As far as the wires... out the hood vents and into the passenger side window to the gauge taped on the dash. prob will plug into the cig. lighter. I wasn't kidding when I said I liked that better.

the car is a turbo. look back through my posts, you can read all about it. lol

I've tried to look at the hoses on top of the engine best I can, and don't see anything obvious...

I just installed a boost and A/F gauge, bought on ebay for $24 each, very easy to install, as mentioned for the A/F just tap into the oxy sensor wire, there is a whole on the driver side going stright inside with no obstactions, big enough for the wire and vacum hose for the boost gauge.

If you search for an A/F gauge you'll find a myriad of choices. Most of it is geared toward the ricer market.

JJ, and anybody else, if you have more than 80K on your stock or replacement O2 sensor, I would replace it. Not only will the gauge be more accurate, but you'll get better gas mileage. I got 3 extra mpg's when I replaced mine.

its called glow shift, and yest they are geared towards the ricre market, but they look decent. They have a buy it now price of $24.95 and come in white or black. Just do a search on ebay for boost or A/F gauge and look for glow shift.

sorry to hijack the post, but with the wiring for an airflow meter, does the ground wire need to be hooked up to the ecu or is it ok to just ground it any where?

A ground anywhere will work. I wired the + wire into the back of my stereo (igntion controlled wire) because it was easiest to get to. I wired my ground into the stereo ground as well but any ground will work.

One more Tip here, u dont need to run a wire from the O2 sensor into the car, u can just tap the wire from the A/F gauge to the O2 sensor wire but at the ECU end, not on the engine bay, much easier.
