HELP!
« on: September 04, 2014, 10:39:42 PM »

Hello all,

I'm running into problems with my 92 XR2.

Cold start: runs decent.

As it warms up, I am experiencing worsening drivability, lack of power, lean backfires, gets to the point where the car is undrivable.

Items checked and condition:
Spark plugs.. Less than 100 miles. Gapped .034. NGK plugs. New wires, cap and rotor under 3000 miles.
Fuel filter: Less than 3000 miles.
Timing belt and all associated items: Under 3000 miles.

Timing: 12deg btdc as per specs
Fuel pressure: 32lbs at idle, increases to approx 43psi at full throttle.
TPS: adjusted per factory service manual
O2 sensor : New
PCV valve less than 1000 miles.
Added copper ground straps, Neg bat terminal to strut mount bolt, to engine block, to thermostat housing, to Air Meter. In 2009 I soldered new ends on the typical negative connections at the thermostat bolt, also soldering these to copper bonding straps.
Fuel Injectors: cleaned and flow tested in 2009, less than 3000 miles.
Coolant temp sensor (the one under the intake manifold) Less than 3000 miles.

I have swapped out the following:
distributor=no difference
Air Flow meter= no difference

Pulled the spark plugs and they are WHITE, indicating it is running lean.
I've checked all the hoses and connections, no vacuum leaks or pressure leaks.
Verified cam timing.

Car idles great, but also has a tip-in stumble. Idle speed is 800rpm.

Unplugged O2 sensor, basically runs the same. Plugged it back in.
Unplugged TPS, runs better (but still not 100%) and the check engine light comes on.
I may replace the coolant temp sensor, since they are only $15.00 here locally.

I believe the TPS is the problem, but would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for any help.

Check for an "air leak",

No air leaks found. If I pull the crankcase breather tube out of the hose between the afm and the turbo inlet, the engine stalls out.

At full boost, the fuel pressure is 50lbs. I drove the car for miles and monitored the fuel pressure, when the problem happens, the fuel pressure is normal as before. So I have ruled out a fuel pump or pressure regulator issue.

I'm really stumped on this one.
