Potential coolant leak into combustion chamber???
« on: September 23, 2009, 04:34:00 AM »

My first post...
I live in Ohio, parts of the state require emissions check every 2 years.
Just got thru with a WAIVER this time because I spent nearly $400 on a new exhaust system..
OK that's all well and good..but the system was new 2 years ago when I went thru the same thing..although it eventually did pass that time.

The emission level that fails is NOX.

When the car is hot-ish..I can smell coolant.
But there are no visible indications of a leak anywhere.

My question is this...Is it possible that a small amount of coolant is getting into the combustion chamber somehow? I know this can heave very detrimental effects any many components..and destroy the converter...

Any thoughts???

Hey SV!  If your car is over hot and you smell coolant, is probably the radiator cap letting a little out. If you have a head gasket leak, it's probably burning up inside the combustion chambers and you'll see steam out the exhaust and smell a sweet odor produced by the coolant ,also from the exhaust tip.  Gus

pull your oil dip stick and see if you have coolant on it. if not then check up under the dash/center console and see if it looks like its been dripping there. your heater core could be bad.

as for failing nox, mine did the same. need a cat and special additives as they put it...

Hey SV! If you smell coolant under the hood, there are numerous hoses carrying coolant. You just have to pay attention to any drips or trails.  Good Luck!  Gus

Was curious, on the bottom of the intake(black part says  TURBO) I think I'm missing a gasket- think one goes there? If one does where do they sell them? That could be a big part of it missing. Any help is good- Thanks, Rob

Thanks, I'll go today. Noticed one of the bolts wasn't all the way in when I cleaned it first time & tighten it flush. Has the permanant nut underneath but didn't see any signs of a gasket. Hope it's the hesitation problem-Just checked %#~¥*#%^%*€ it was just a bolt to the bracket. Gotta keep searching, staring & the engine & connections hasn't gotten me very far. O2 next I guess. Thanks again though Rocketman.
