Swap?
« on: April 04, 2011, 11:52:00 AM »

I am going to ask a question that I am certain has been asked on this forum before.  But I am a new guy, so here goes anyway.

How hard is it to do a swap of a turbo engine into an N/A?  I have a '94 N/A that is a hoot to drive, but I am curious about more power(cause that's always more fun).  Is there a standard set of instructions that someone has put together?

Another question along those same lines is...does anybody make a blower that mounts to this engine?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'll copy this from your other thread:

To do a turbo swap right, you'll want a whole donor car.

The easiest route, is to go find an XR2 to drive.

The turbo swap is not as much a swap as it is a conversion, you can swap in just motor/harness but then your stuck with a ticking timebomb of a transmission. (turbo has beefier trans, larger better clutch)

If you'd like I can go into detail about the conversion.

Thanks for the reply.  I guess that answers this thread.  I would prefer to find an XR2 and fix that up as opposed to disassembling one, unless it is totaled.  I asked about an engine in the thread that is in the parts portion of the forum and will see if there are any responses there.

Matt has done this conversion, to "Antoinette", my blue 94. I didn't find the swap that difficult. However I just sat my ass in a lawn chair with a beer, and watched! But, going by the amount of times he swore out loud, I'd bet you'd be better off picking up a XR2 to drive, than attempting that swap!

That pretty much seals the deal.  I am not proud...and not afraid to listen to those with more experience that I.  Therefore, after careful consideration, I will look for an engine to rebuild in my spare time, or do the rings on this one.  Then, when money permits, find an XR2 to play with.  Again, thanks for the advice.

I think the thing you should look at is the overall condition of the car you have now....meaning, is it a keeper. Then build from there.

That's really what it boils down to. For the average or below avg condition capri, its not really worth the work, when you can seek out an XR2. (like Tony did!)

However, I can completely understand sentimental attatchments, if the car is special to you in some way other than just the fact that it's a capri.

And if the car is super mint, or an above average 94... I can understand wanting to swap.
