like a miata's small inlet tube, which my engine does not appear to have.

What?  It's used for the heater pipe that runs under the exhaust manifold, you better replace that o-ring unless you want to smell burning coolant.

It's called the coolant bypass line. It runs under the manifold and plugs into the lower rad hose water neck with that o-ring.

This is the bypass pipe, it runs along the front of the block.

hoo, boy.
this connection is leaking, as expected for that lack of maintenance when i couldn't find it for that o-ring.

i just found the connection, totally blind, removed manifold shield.

i unbolted the inlet-pipe from the waterpump inlet.
i removed the lower radiator hose.
-- but i cannot get the coolant bypass line to pop-out of the inlet-pipe.

-- there is no clamp for this line, does it just "pop out" of that inlet-pipe??

it's a tight space, but i feel i'm working it overly firmly..

This pipe runs under the exhaust manifold over to the heater core.  You need to unbolt a corner nut from the exhaust manifold in order to remove it.  Then remove the hoses connected to it and pull it out with a bit of effort it should come out.

that water pump inlet pipe and the two bolts that hold it in place are just in a terrible spot.
i eventually got it.

- 1. with a tube cutter, i cut the bypass pipe between its engine block hanger and the elbow.

- 2. i was then able to pull-out the left half of the bypass pipe and the stubborn water pump inlet pipe to separate them, paint them, re-gasket, put them back into place.

- 3. i reconnected the splice in the bypass pipe with 5/8" hose and hose clamps.

i may post a pic here someday.

i'm not ashamed of of cutting that bypass pipe.

i'm in this car often enough that if i can invent methods to prevent removing excess fasteners/parts for ease of future access, then i will.

Just watch the heat from the exhaust manifold on your rubber coupling there. Glad you got it all sorted though

Wait till you get my problem, because of the way I mounted the clamp on the radiator hose, I have to run a longer then average power steering/ac belt.  Really made me feel like an idiot when I realized that was the problem, but I'm not taking it all apart to fix something so minor, and so annoying.
