Feels like I don't hit 4th gear ( A/T )
« on: April 14, 2012, 04:21:00 AM »

.
My daughters 1993 Mercury Capri, N/A, Auto Trans

Doesn't go to 4th gear.
Sounds like it's been doing this for awhile.

When I test drive, it briefly drops from gear 3 to 2 on rare occasions.. not like when you punch the accelerator. This doesn't happen on all test drives.
Trans Fluid is at operating level.

Where would you begin looking?

mm k.
i just did a highway test drive and it does occasionally reach 4th gear, but it seems to prefer not to.
My capri is the same year and transmission ..it responds just fine.. but my daughter's capri maintains higher RPMs.

I don't know a whole lot about the automatics. Is it a true 4th gear or is it a 3-gear with a torque converter lockup?

I had some major TCC issues on my Grand Prix where the TCC wouldn't lock on the highway, but it was GM related issues.

The Capri auto is a 4EAT IIRC - used on many, many cars - maybe google around and see who else has had a problem.

hmm. I dunno.
here's something that will hopefully be a sure sign for what you're thinking.
in AT capris; when i'm in 4th gear, i can press the accel a little and it feels like i kinda down-shifted & my RPMs raise 250, but not quite to down to third gear. i can hold this position.

then a little further push it you feel it actually drop into a lower gear which would likely be 3rd gear considering it's 70mph... yes?
make sense?

thanks for that input. i'll have to research your thoughts.
