Swappin out the 1.6 to ........
« on: September 01, 2009, 04:57:00 PM »

Hay guys have been reading a few of rcicustoms ad rocket mans posts and am thinkin about doin a engine swap. Just general question what engines are easy to swap to i have a 91 1.6 n/a.
The 1.8L from a 323 looks like it will, what other if any will go. also how much electrical work is needed.... as i said am just thikin about it at this stage but would consider it if the electrical work isnt that major/complex...

my personal opinion would be to turbo the 1.6 with parts from theese guys ...i got alot of parts you need... and russ and matt should have what i dont...

but if you must swap.. a b6t is easiest i would say, and then a bp.. but id get a complete harness and engine /tranny doing that,
the kl-V6 will go.. but its a hella project.. but id give big props if you did it...

how skilled a tech are you ??? and what do you want as an end result???

i think a b6t would put a shit eatin grin on your face and is the easiest route....

B6T is the easiest. N/A bp would be the next hardest, followed by BPT...then V6

What kind of tools do you have? BP swap requires cutting and welding the framerail (unless you go the ghetto route and bash it in with a big hammer)

You're best off sourcing the BP from a protege or escort gt... did the BG 323 come with a dohc BP? Pretty sure they got the B8 sohc 1.8.

Electrical - I'm running a BPturbo on B6T electricals... its not that hard to swap to 1.8 electricals you just need wiring diagrams for both cars. The main engine harness will need splicing into the chassis harness and you'll need to save a few bits from the stock harness.

The fuel lines and air intake are drastically different and make it really tight in the engine bay, be prepared to get creative

ok looks like its the B6T then, i am only average i would say tec wise ahahah and thats bein more lucky then tec wise i would say. I have a block and tackle and 2400kg hrdo jack, farly av tools but thats no problem as my flat mate is getting his down here soon and i will be all good on that front. the reason i ask is because in Australia there is a new law (YAY) that p-platers (drivers under the age of 23) cant have a turbo engine and engine cant go over 200kw;s. and as i am 19 .... yer hahah

Rods are the same between the turbo and nonturbo. They'll hold up anything the stock turbo can throw at it. You really want to look into getting the turbo gearbox, clutch, flywheel, axles, and brakes though

another option is to supercharge it

Is the N/A gearbox not able to handle it? will do a little more resurch on ratios and stuff...
and supercharge it is always an option.. lol that would be a site, a set of blowers poking out the top of an engine bay on a capri haha

N/A gearbox might hold up if you go really easy on it... theres a lot of debate on it. Historically though the B6T chews them up. cant handle the power.

Hmm Supercharger?

You Aussie folk have the FE3 engine over there right? 2.0L...? that would be a ridiculously fun car

No in your other Mazda vehicles... You should be able to find an FE3 somewhere...its like a little larger 1.8 i think...

This is a custom fabbed intake manifold so I could sit a Mazda Millenia twin screw supercharger on top of it    never finished it the B6T I had died.
