motor/transmission mounts
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:53:00 AM »

Can anyone tell me if the trans crossmember is different between the n/a and the turbo models? I'm installing a "g" series trans from a Mercury Tracer LTS 1.8L and neither of the mounts from my n/a or the Tracer seem to align properly on my n/a crossmember. I can force them but it puts everything in a bind. I'm also thinking that the turbo's have different trans mounts than the n/a. Any suggestions? Thanks,

The 1.8L trans is not really compatible with the 1.6 stuff...yes its still a G series but thats about it. I believe the axle size and spline count are off. The 1.8L transmissions are also intended to tilt the engine forward 15 degrees as the BP's are designed that way, the 1.6 stands vertical. Thats why the mounts won't align.

The BP g-series trans are totally different from the turbo capri trans. Turbo trans have different axle sets, and use a cable actuated clutch. The motor mounts are the same across all the capris I think, the only exception might be the rear for the auto trans.

Thanks Rocket for the info. I have found that the BP "G" series tranny has some major differences than the Capri "G" series tranny. The bp trans bolts up to the 1.6L block perfectly using the bp shim plate. The capri starter bolts up fine, and the bp slave cylinder attaches to the stock n/a capri hydraulics with just a slight tweek of the line. I installed a fidanza aluminum flywheel and matching new clutch kit with no problems. A driver's side capri turbo axle installed with no problem but the passenger side axle hole is in a different location than the capri's. Neither the 1.8L or 1.6L jack shaft would bolt up to the 1.6L block when installed. I tried to retrofit several other long axles using protege,mx-3,escort,etc.. but have yet to find anything that works with the 24 spline hubs on the capri. I'm thinking of changing the hubs to 26 spline escort/tracer and using a 1.6L mx-3 rh axle which is 36" compressed. This would allow for the use of stock escort rotors (10.25") and eliminate my nagging wheel bearing problem. I already have dual pattern wheels. I will also have to figure out a way to fabricate new trans/crossmember mounts to sit the engine back level. Anyways, sorry this post is long but I thought I would share my experience on this so others don't make the same mistakes. If I find a solution and can make this idea work I'll make sure you guys are the first to know. Thanks everyone!

If you're looking for a replacement F-series trans PM me...

The way the BP trans is setup  it kind of needs the engine tilted forward, the diff and axles won't sit level, its just not meant to work that way. The engine is clocked differently for the 1.8 stuff. Keeping the engine level will mean the diff and axles will be sitting way under the car.

If you switched to an escort / protege passenger mount to tilt the engine forward the 15* you'd get everything to sit right.

As far as the intermediate shaft goes - the BP shaft is longer. For those swapping from a B6T to a BPT you have to mod it, it won't bolt up, I welded in a steel extension and re-drilled it for the proper bolt pattern. Not sure what esle you could do for axles, you might be able to make some sort of crazy hybrid that'll fit.

Good luck -
