Tokico Rear Struts Vs. OEM Struts
« on: March 29, 2005, 01:14:00 PM »

I need help.  The OEM struts have a horizonal tab where a bolt is used to bolt the strut body to the steering kuckle.  On the tokico strut, this tab is actually used to hold the brake line.
Has anyone ran into this difference.  Everything else is the same between the tokico and oem rear struts.

I saw the picture in the gallery(coil over?).  Do you remember the difference that I'm talking about.  I am installing these struts along with the H & R springs.  This tab and bolt combination is bolted to a linear arm(top part of the kuckle or hub.  To go along with this, the bottom part of strut is bolted to the main part of the hub in the normal ways of using two bolts.  Can this tab be cut off the original strut and put on the new strut.  Also, the linear arm already has the tab to route the brake line through.  Note, no problem with front strut replacement but the rear is a serious road block.

Let me know what you think.

I spoke with Pat from Midcomustang and he advised his 94 capri had this bolt/linear arm.  This is actually a additional brace that bolt to the backside of the brake rotor shield.  He said that it is ok not to use this brace because most aftermarket rear struts just have the tab for the brake line.  Thus, I 'm going to wrapup the strut install.  Will let you know regarding the results.

Thanks for your help.

Well, I got the rear struts installed but the only problem I have now is the caliper bracket bolts are too long.  These bolts were used because the brace I took off has spacers welded to the brace so the caliper bracket & brace can bolt to the steering knuckle.  None of the part stores has any bolts.  Going to check on Monday with the local savage yards, dealerships, or MCCM.

Question - Should check with the Mazda dealership?  I need shorter bolts.

Good question. Can try and ask mazda couldnt hurt. Also look up 323 86-89 in junk yards or in store for parts. And call tokico up maybe they have bolts they can sell.

A while back, I noted that I will let everyone know how my car drive with the new struts and springs.  Well, the handling was alot better than stock and bouncy on some of the roads in the Concord/Charlotte area.

I than had new ball joints and outer tie rods installed about a month later.  This tighten the front suspension.  However, I still wasn't satisfy.  I was experiencing a clunk noise when taking off from a stop and vibration thru the steering wheel.  I took my service advisor at the Kia/Chrysler dealership in Salisbury where I worked.  He advised that I needed motor mounts, wheel bearings, and my front brake rotors were warped.  From this, I ordered everything from NAPA except for the strut tower brace, motor mounts and belts.

To make a long story short, everything was installed except for the rotors and right side bearings.  The installer discovered that my car had the turbo rotors and brakes.  This was a total surprise because I ordered Non-turbo rotors.  This made my day.  As for the other parts installed, my car is almost back to new condition in term of tightness in the suspension but it handle better.  It has been a long road to get the car back to this level.

Back to the rotor, I don't what happen but if anyone has a 94 NA Capri and has not changed the original rotor, I would check to see if your car has the turbo rotors and brakes.  Like I said before, this was a nice surprise and replacements rotors are cheaper than the replacement NA rotors.

Next, water pump, crankshaft seals, and new clutch.

94s turbos and non-turbos have the same rotors. there is the guides in the manual section for the 91-94 years. in the very last section tells u the differences between the 2 off the bat. you will notice that the rotors are the same for both n/a and xr2.
