Title: Check Engine Light No Power 3K RPM Help
Post by: Gostlrs on February 12, 2009, 03:51:00 PM
1. Where in the world is the port to check the codes? I went to auto zone and they had no idea too. we looked all over.

2. Last night while driving on the freeway i got the light to come on. car ran fine. i pulled over restarted car and ran fine home no light. In the morning i drove to work with no problems as well. On the way home from work i noticed it was cutting out in the 3000 RPM range. Only a little. got home changed and drove it some more. it would get worse and worse. sometimes it would die when i come to a stop and i got the light about 3 times.car would sputter and buck when hitting 3K RPM. It already has new plugs and wires. new battery, rechecked all wires all were fine. i left auto zone and stopped to get gas since i was under 1/4 tank and when i left the gas station it worked great...could i of had bad gas and i got water in the tank? i added some of that fuel cleaner on the last tank so i can emission test it. it said to run it on one tank then refule and do the test. i just fine it so weird that i add gas and it works fine....

Help and thoughts?

the ports are under the hood near the firewall... good luck with having advance auto have the right connectors... they lost the ones for mine 2 years ago... there's either 2 or 3 things they gotta plug into

someone else here will be able to take a pic and circle where they are for ya, i don't remember

i did notice 3 connectors by the emissions/fuel canister on the passenger side. is that where it is at?

a photo would be awesome....

is there a way to short it out and count the light blinks ?

Hey Gost! I can't help you on the hook up for a code reader but there is a method to make the blinks and the number of blinks clues you into what system is giving you trouble. I think you're on to something but not water because it would permanately fouled your fuel filter. It may have to do with your fuel pick-up not extending down far enough into the gas tank. Hence things working alright after putting more gas in the tank.  Gus

You have to jump the diagnostic connector on the firewall and then KOEO (key on engine off)

The CEL will blink any codes that may be at fault. As far as I know the MECS system does not store codes.

Here the link to the codes is on the main site: http://teamcapri.com/howtos/cartroublecodes.html (http://teamcapri.com/howtos/cartroublecodes.html)

And the diagnostic port is one of these near the Evap canister:

I want to say its a green connector?

well car did same t hing when it got to just less then 1/4 tank. no engine light. only thing i can think of is there is a hole in the fuel return line above the pump. when there is enough gas in the tank to cover the hole works fine....then when it uncovers it will starve. guess i will just gas up at a 1/4 tank until i have time to get in there to check on it. might as well upgrade the fuel pump while i am there..LOL

i know this may sound a little dumb but i had this same thing happen on a different car... it was caused by a loose gas cap of all things... i dont remember exactly what the guy at the dealership told me but it had something to do with air leaking into the tank from the lose cap...

its happened 2 times and both times when it gets to just below a 1/4 tank. it passes the pressure test at emissions this week. i hear ti relieve pressure. i will take out the pump and check the lines later.
