That info is wrong. I have 17x7 alloys with 205/40/17s w/ 40mm offset on my capri and do not have a problem with rubbing the strut towers. I bought them cheap from discounttiredirect.com .
If the offset and tire "plus" size are not right then you will have problems. You can't go bigger than the 205/40/17 tire size

Paul G.'s right.  I also have 205/40-17 on my Capri and it's lowered about 2" all the way around.
No problems with tires rubbing or hitting.

i've found that it depends on the strut and tire. for example, i have a set of 40mm offset 15x6.5 wheels and 205/50-15 falken ziex rims that clear the rear strut of my 1991 capri n/a but will have the tire rub on the strut of my 1994 xr2. in other words a 205 width tire will fit with a 40mm offset, but the clearance is so tight that depending on the brand of tire or strut, you can have problems. that doesn't leave much margin for error.

besides, if a custom wheel was made, we could have the center bore made hubcentric to the exact size of the capri w/o having to use hub spacers. i know, the wheels work w/o hub spacers too, but the wheels do not run as true and that can affect balance and tire wear.

anyways, i'm not going to bother with the project because the "im poor" reply pretty much sums up the general concensus of lots of owners when it comes to spending dough on their capris.

I agree that you can use 205s without any trouble.  I had 14" geometrics and originally set out to fill the wheel wells, but decided later that if the factory intended 15" rims to be what worked, then that's what I'd use.  I went with more sidewall in the height mix and, as it turns out, the car has more of an old British Sports Car stance.

I went with 15X6.5 American Racing "Estrellas" and used a 205/55R15 Firestone Indy 500s.  When I first saw them on the car, they appeared to be REALLY close to the spring perches and I was worried about rubbing - I used no offsets.

After 4000 miles, mostly on long highway trips at 75 mph with a passenger, full trunk and back seat, I can say that I haven't encountered any problems.

I've had the same 17's on two different cars. my 91 w/ h and r springs and tokico struts and now my 92 w/stock components. With the lowered springs and struts I had a two finger width margin in between the strut spring perch and the tire. It never rubbed. Boy I wish I'd have taken off the springs and struts before I got rid of my 91

On the ClubSprint the standard wheel is a 5 spoke CSA alloy (which are no longer available new)
16" x 6.5" wearing Michelin MXX 205/45 ZR16... Haven't measured the offset?
