Soft top issues
« on: May 18, 2011, 11:53:00 PM »

I've picked up a second hand capri, but the soft top will not close...if its hooked over the back lip first...u cannot set the top down all the way and rest it on the front window.
I'm a bit puzzled on how u would adjust this.....i've taken a photo too show what i mean.
Any advise on this would really be great, as it has me stumped.

There are 2 adjustments just under the boot cover at both corners right above the hinged part of the frame. They should have rubber stoppers on the ends. Make sure those are adjusted out enough to allow the top to go all the way forward. If they are not the issue, check to see if the frame is bent along the top of the side windows. Some people can't figure out how to get the top to fit in the boot and force it down causing the frame to get bent out of shape. That's what was wrong with my first soft top. I will post pics of those bolts when I get home.

Thanks Tony,
I've seen those screws with the rubber stops.....unscrewed them all the way back........
still no go....
even with them screwed back it only goes so far forward, which seems the right amount to me.

so if you open it and lay it down, its first great...but try doing that with the back clip in....its a no no.
It's almost like its too short or shrunk?
I thought it maybe the use of the wrong bottom tension wires, so i unscrewed the screws from them to see if it made any difference....and that didnt help either  :(

Let it sit out in the sun for a couple hours to let the vinyl heat up, then try again. It may take a lot of force, but it will stretch. Russ, Ian and I put a new top on mine while it was cold and it did the exact same thing. After a few hours in the sun, I was able to get it to stretch enough to fit and now I have no trouble at all.

Yeah i might try that, but wow its a loooooooong way to stretch....hehe looks like i might have to wait to the summer to come, coz its pretty cold here at the moment.

How hard did you find it installing a roof?
I seen a thing on you tube about it...them selling a dvd of it...looks good.....hahahah wouldn't mind a download link to that one if someone has it  ;)

Mine was WAY off like that, too. Took 3 of us to get it to barely catch on the hooks. You will need to loosen those J-hooks almost the way just to get it to hook. Wait a day or so, then tighten them a little and do it all over again. Tedious process, but it works.

Do you mean installing a new soft top? If so, I wouldn't recommend trying it yourself although some people here have. If your top is trashed, it's easier to just get a whole new top and frame. That's about a 10 minute job!

Yes, i was thinking that might be a easy to do version also, like if u see one at a wreckers etc.
Just get a friend, and bolt the new one straight in

On Midcountymustang there's a 55 step process under Facts, Tips and Useful Stuff. I've found a lot of things there useful. Was afraid to try and put a soft top on myself, but after reading it I'll do it myself someday. Heard some people paid more for labor then the top itself.

Good job. Just keep cranking it down, it'll get there eventually!
