needing help again -- stalled
« on: December 11, 2012, 04:01:00 PM »

Hi all,

i have a 1993 n/a 5 speed

tonight i was driving through town at about 30mph and the car stalled.
no warning lights, smells, sound or anything noticed.

restarted and ran about 20 seconds and died again
repeated this 3 or 4 times, coasted into parking lot and lifted the hood.

the temp gage just above 'C', charging very good, oil pressure gage good, gasoline more than 1/2 tank.

oil on stick ok, water coolant level ok
vacuum hoses and intake pipe ok as best as i could tell (it was getting dark)

fuel out of filter, spark from coil, and spark from cap through #1 plug wire.
cap and rotor ok i think - getting darker
didn't pull plugs yet - too dark now.

tried to start again and looked at tachometer -- needle bobs up and down about 1/8" very fast.
waited about 15 minutes thinking and then it started and I was able to drive 3 or 4 minutes towards my sisters house before it died again and i coasted into her driveway.

tried to start again but just turns over and over.

wondering if likely intake vacuum leak since it started several times and died, or ignition?

thanks for any suggestions and / or help

It does sound like an air leak in the intake or a vacuum leak. Make sure everything is tight on your intake hoses, it only takes a small gap to mess everything up...

thanks

i'll look this evening if i get over to the car before dark after work.

a mazda friend said maybe temp sensor to ecu. suggested disconnect neg cable and see if it reset sensor reading on ecu. this part is only 19.99 at autozone 2 blocks away.

I will probably try to read error code if it has one too using MIL or VOM.

I'll post whatever i find out
thanks again

Troubleshooting update:

I replaced the engine temperature control sensor yesterday. jumped the car this morning before church, started and ran 50 minutes then died and didnt restart. clock blanked out when car died. dead-ish battery 5.38 volts. gauge was showing 'charge' while running. needle dropped when headlights raised / lowered. including raise only with lights off.
i'll check belt after football game. Go Panthers
also will swap battery.
if I get it to start i'll disconnect battery and see if runs off altenator.

another update.
12/30 replaced battery. car started right up 2 times. tried to start 1/1 and crank / no start.

dang it
crank - cough - crank - crank
crank - crank - cough - crank - crank
crank - crank - crank - crank
no start

20 minutes later crank - cough - start.
turned it off and tried again.
crank cough no start

tach still a little bounces while cranking
didn't discharge like before while running and raised / lowered headlights like before

injectors? fuel filter? fuel system somewhere?
air / idle control valve? hmmm.
I guess I'll have to check for codes when i get a chance and dig a little deeper.

I thought maybe that. I've got an extra distributor I was thinking about swapping this weekend. Seems like 3 or 4 unrelated things at once perhaps, that is what is throwing me.

Fuel pressure too low. Replaced fuel pump / sock etc. starts & runs. Gone 40 miles got to go 40 back no problems yet. No sign it wants to act up. Will get back home then drive it to work friday. Maybe its fixed.

Getting colder now.
I suppose I need to check / repair rear defroster soon. May need it after work soon.
