What type transmission?
« on: November 20, 2015, 10:00:46 PM »

I'm trying to figure out what type transmission does an N/A use.  I've found that the turbo uses an F type.  What do they call the N/A engine?

Thanks, Jack Byrd

The N/A MTX = F5M-R
The N/A ATX = F4EAT
The XR2 MTX = G5M-R

Excellent!  My previous transmission imploded due to mechanic using ATF instead of Sycromesh and it leaked out in less than a week.  I made sure Sycromesh was put in the new one and it's leaking also.  About a quart a month.  I think I'll try 75-W90.  Both leaked from the shifter seal.  If I can find parts, would like to rebuild the old one and new seal for the good one.

Thanks, Jack

The turbo trans is a Gtype not an F-type.

ATF is the fluid installed by the factory in both G and Ftypes. It should not have cause the trans to implode, it's not ideal but many Capri live their whole lives on ATF.

The shifter seal is a bummer. I think the trans needs to be split apart to replace that seal.

Could possibly cut off the shifter connection, pull out the old seal, install a new one, and carefully re-weld it

The ATF didn't cause the tranny to crash, the lack of it did.  The trans fluid leaked out in less than a week.  The whole bottom of the car was soaked, so I know the mechanic put at least some in when he reinstalled the clutch.
