Once you remove the HLA's you should be able to remove the springs without too much trouble.
Please tell us how you did it!

Recommended other things to do, DEFINITELY change the water pump, and if the car shows any sort of sluggishness in cranking you might want to replace the starter.  Did both when I changed out the head on my car and it was definitely worth it.  Water pump is something like $60 and with the head off it's easy access.

This MIGHT help you, not sure though; the heads are fairly similar.

Thanks for the link. I already have a new water pump to install. It is a Gates $30.00 from Rock Auto.
It cranks over fine so I will wait on the starter.

The head is off and at the machine shop. I am going to let them inspect it plane it, and do the valves.

When I took the heat shield off the exhaust manifold all but one of the bolts broke. Then when I tried to remove them on the first one my "easy"out broke. I think I have read on here that some have removed the heat shield and left it off. Any problems when doing this. Does the engine temp run too hot etc.?????

Thanks again.

It's got nothing to do with engine temp, but it will make the engine bay a little warmer from radiant heat. I've run for years without one without any issues, but it doesn't hurt to have it there. Those bolts are a bitch, though.

I got the head back from the machine shop and it looks awesome. I will post some pictures later.
Cleaned, milled, vacuum tested, removed valves, checked guides, replaced seals, valve job/touch up, set up valve springs, set valve tip height, replaced valves. ...$248.00.

The re-assembly will start tonight.

The head is in place and I hope to wrap it all up tomorrow.

I now have a timing question. I set timing on this before and I was just looking things up to get ready to finish up in the morning. The directions for setting the timing say to ground the STI connector as well as plug the vacuum lines. What\where the hell is the STI connector?? I don't recall doing this before.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

What directions are you following that say to ground that connector?

I know certain cars you have to ground something to set base timing. I have not needed to on the Capri
