Title: It’s winking at me
Post by: JimmyGermany on January 13, 2021, 05:39:27 PM
Gentlemen!

The electrical fun and games continue.
Although I’m pretty sure both headlights initially worked after the battery incident, now the left one won’t retract. Light works and right headlight functions normally (both in lighting and pop-up sense) .
Are both sides on the same fuse? Can the relay fail on only one side? Or is the motor to blame? I can’t do much work on the car while it’s in storage (a condition the rental contact), but basic troubleshooting is possible.

Hints?
Thanks
James

There is a clockwork mechanism that is a switch in the headlight. They came with grease in them that hardens over time and causes them to fail.  All you have to do is disassemble, clean and reassemble. Easier than it sounds. I did it one time a few years ago and it wasn't any big deal. Check out the online tech manual for more into.

Hello GreyWolf!

Many thanks for the tip.
The projects are piling up for the spring 🙄.

Gentlemen!

I'm planning my attack on the winking headlights, and I want to make sure I'm thinking about this right.

With the headlight motor disconnected, I should be able to attach the meter to the plug coming from the controler. When I move either of the headlight switches, I should see a 12V signal, right? Would this signal only last until the "good" headlight has moved fully, or would it remain present, as there is no "completion" of the cycle for the disconnected light?

Due to other projects, I've currently got access to the controler, and want to be able to rule it out as a possible source of error before replacing all the inner trim.

Thanks for your advice!
Cheers
James

Gentlemen,

Absolutely NO clue what the problem is.
I fear a broken cable between motor and control unit. Arcing would explain the "stuttering", but I'm not sure.
I've handed over to a Pro, and I'll let you know the outcome.

Gentlemen!

It's FIXED!
It was indeed a broken wire in the bundle, but it was (luckily) near the front.

New question arose out of the fight - see my new thread.

Cheers
