Title: 5th Annual Mid-America Capri Gathering
Post by: drbob on February 21, 2006, 09:55:00 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, and Children of most ages.

I (drboB) am proud to announce that the 5th Annual Mid-America Capri Gathering will be on Saturday, July 29th 2006.

The time starts at 9:30 am at the Rockford Speedway in Rockford Illinois. (http://www.rockfordspeedway.com for directions)

Get your vacation days in.  Come and join the Largest Gathering Of Capri Convertible Enthusiasts In The Country.

Last year we had 33 cars from 11 states, This year we are expecting at least 50 cars.

This is a great opportunity to meet the people you meet on the internet.  This is a great opportunity to drive your car on a real NASCAR racetrack.  This is a great opportunity to have a really great time.

If you come once, you will want to come again (just ask anyone who have shown up)  Almost everyone who has shown up once, have come back again the next year.

I look forward to seeing everybody again, and meeting new members.

DR. Bob has done an excellent job of putting on a great outing. I would like to try to get sponsors for this years outing.   If anybody has any suggestions on who to ask let me know. I am developing a form letter which I will be mailing out to who ever we think might give us money or goods which can be used for the outing.  There are several auto parts stores in Rockford who usually give to other shows so I am going to be contacting them. Suggestion and or idea's would help.

Registration for the 5th Annual Mid-America Capri Gathering is starts today.

The cost this year for the Gathering is $40 per car.  I know it is more than last year, but expenses have increased.  I apologize if this is an inconvience to anyone.

To send money via paypal, the email address is drbob5769@yahoo.com , in the comments section, be sure to let me know how many people are coming, and T-Shirt sizes.  Extra T-Shirts are $20.  If you are going to snail mail the money, send it with the same information to:
boB Marcum
c/o 5th MACG
1335 W. Stover st
Freeport, IL  61032

Also this year, we are going to try something new for the Bag-O-Crap.  We are putting the call out to all members to send in items.  We are anticipating 50 cars this year, so send in enough of one item for everyone.

If you have an exceptional item that you think would make a good door prize, please send it also.

So come one, come all.  Enjoy an exceptional day with your fellow Capri owners.

Registrations and money must be in by June 1st.  This gives us time to get the T-Shirts ordered, and paid for.  Again, all registrations must be in by June 1 2006.  Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to seeing you on the 29th of July.  Registration will be $50 at the door.

I would like to that those of you who have sponsored this event so far.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  I am unable to spend the money I did the last couple years (I keep buying more cars) and every littlebit helps greatly.

This year our track costs went up quite a bit, but I have been able to cover that.  Unfortunatly that is about all I can abosorb this year.  So we need as many people as possible to come to the event (the more money coming in, the more we can do).

Remember the 15th June is the deadline for registrations.  This gives us enough time to get the artwork, and money to the T-shirt folks, so we can have them in time for the Gathering.

Of course you can still show up the day of the event, but it will cost you $50 but cannot guarentee B-O-C or T-shirt size.

:(   i wish i could go.  but i think that would be to far for my capri to drive. i would trailer but i know hubby cant get time off and i would not make the drive myself.  id fly but then still leaves the issue of getting the car there.
boo hoo

so how many have signed up so far?? a good response?

i was thinking of sending something for the B.O.C.  but what...  i will have to go and hunting for something good.

Oklahomer is not that far away.  maybe an 11 hour drive.  You could do that with your eyes closed.....OK maybe not......But we had a car come up from New MExico (and he will be here again this year)  I think we had someone show up from OK last year.

Registrations are slow right now.  In fact, NO ONE has registered.  Making me wonder if it will be worth it or not to do this.  If enough people do not register, there will be no T-Shirts.  But I also realize that there is still plenty of time for people to get their reservations in.  And from what I've heard, this years will be larger than last years.

So it's true, Americans are getting fatter every year otherwise why would this year's tees be larger than last year's?

I look forward to seeing everyone who showed up last year.

For those of you who have not made it yet to a Gathering, I can tell you this:  You will have a great time.  It is really special to see soo many Capri's in one place at one time.

Then to get to drive down the highway with 30+ cars, and the looks people give is cause for a case of "Perma-Smile" (and that's if driving around a 1/4 mile high banked race track does not do it for you)

We will hav another early entry drawing this year, so for those of you who register before June 2nd (no later than June 1st) we will have a nece door prize.

The time is so close now, I am really starting to get excited.

Just ask anyone who has been here before.  IT IS WORTH IT!!!  A good time is had by all.

If we get a couple more sponsors, there will be trophy's again this year and t-shirts, and good food.

SEE YOU HERE!!

For those of you who are coming the night before, there will be dinner/drinks friday night (you pay your own)  also for those of you who are staying at the motel in freeport, there will be a gift basket at the hotel, and FREE coffee and donuts on saturday morning before the event in freeport courtesy of the freeport tourist buearu.  They will also be advertising this to the community so there will be a lot of gawkers this year.

Lets please start registering.  I am trying to decide between a super 8 motel, or a country inn and suites (w/swimming pool) for our desiginated hotel.  Comments?

I was told the more of an economic impact we make, the more the city will do for us in the future.

I am curious as to how many of you who havent registered plan on coming to this years Event?  It would be good to know these things for planning purposes.

Also I asked about hotel preferences, and got virtually no response, so I will pick.  Tomorrow I will get a block of 10 rooms at the super 8.  I will find out the cost then.

The person who does our T-Shirt design has not submitted a design.  Also, there are less people than last year registered, so there will be no T-shirts.  There will however be emroidered Event Hats.  (they are quality hats, not cheap mesh truckers hats)

For those of you staying overnight at the hotel in freeport, our visitors center will be giving small gift baskets.  Also the morning of the event, there will be coffee and donuts provided by the center.

If there is anything I forgot or you would like to see, please let me know.

I'd love to come, but it all depends on another trip I'm scheduled to go on.  I may or may not be back in time for a journey to Rockford in light of that.  However, I'm going to try my best as that track is sooo tempting and I'd really like to meet many of you guys.

Registrations are in, there are a lot of first timers coming, and I am suprised by how many people who last year said they would be coming back, are not coming back to make the trip this year. (I would appreciate some insight to this) We do have some long distance travelers this year.  Walt will be driving back up from New Mexico.  We also have first time registrations in from AR, PA, and TX.

Today I will be getting our motel information.  The city's visitor center will be giving gift baskets to those staying at the hotels, and coffee and donuts at the center on the morning of the event.  Also there will be an informal gathering at a local restraunt on friday night and a movie at a drive-in theater on saturday night for those interested.

Since there are less people coming this year, there will be no t-shirts, but there will be Event hats.  These are quality hats with nice event embroidering on them.  I just don't have the money to pay for them this year like I did last year, I hope you understand, and are not too disapointed.

For those of you who ordered x-tra t-shirts, I will refund your money, or give back $10 and give an extra hat.  Please let me know which you prefer.

If you would still like to come, you can register at  www.caprigathering.com (http://www.caprigathering.com)

For those of you who are staying the night in Freeport, you had better get your room reserved now.  After today the block of rooms I reserved will be gone, and taken by others.  The hotels are real busy that weekend, and was only able to find a block of rooms at the super 8.

There is mini golf at the park we will be picnicing in, and a city golf course (Im sorry I can't give more info on the golf, I don't golf)

Bob -

Are you leaving some sort of directions to dinner Friday night and to the park on Saturday (or is the park close to the Speedway?

This would be my first time in Freeport.  I've lived in downstate Illinois for 8 years, but once I get north of I-80, I'm just another Rhode Island Yankee.

whenever you want to leave is ok.

Three days until the largest gathering of Cpari Convertible Enthusiasts in the WORLD.

I have been looking for a restraunt for us to meet in, but they are all booked (and have been for months) so my plan is to meet at the Pizza Hut next to the Super 8.  For those of you who are coming and don't know how to get there, use mapquest.

The Super 8 address is 1649 Willard Dr.  Freeport, IL.  You will see the Pizza hut is approx 60 feet away from the motel.  For those of you who need directions to the race track.....use mapquest..... go to www.rockfordspeedway.com (http://www.rockfordspeedway.com)  for the address.

Please gas up before you go to the racetrack, because we will not be stopping for gas on the way to Freeport.

Since there were not enough people getting rooms, the visitors bureau will not be putting gift baskets in the rooms.

At the picnic, there will be hamburgers & brats.  Also potato salad, macaroni salad, pop, and water.

At the race track there will be water available (for $1.00 per bottle)

This years event will be a much scaled down version of last years.

We welcome everyone, and admission will be $50 at the door.  This will cover track time and picnic.  And if you don't want to go to the picnic, and just run on the track, the admission will be $50.

The weather looks to be great.  It is supposed to get up in the 90's, with party cloudy skies.

Bob and all the others, I'm doing fine. I had taken all my stuff from there that morning because I planned on switching to a no-smoking room - guess they were all smoking yesterday ( bad taste joke there). The police did not let anyone go down that way, Jim Martin had invited me to the Fiesta Cancun (?) for drinks but I lost him. So I finally decided to head home to Minnesota. Had been thinking of the drivein in Monroe. I was so tired from the heat and all that I got a room in Monroe and then basically slept the night. Got home here in South St. Paul about 1pm today, Sunday.

The others at the Super 8 were, as far as I know, Mark Ruffalo and Taea (sp?) and Kurt & Debbie (?) from Arkansas. Mark had checked out in the morning, not sure about Kurt.

I read in the paper that no one is hurt, but a few had their plans severely interrupted. I'm grateful that there is no human injury and, for myself, that I have everything I brought with me.

While we were having a picnic, half of the motel burned to the ground.  I didn't find out about it until this morning.

Mark Russillo and Thea are okay, thanks.  We continue to be Stratosphere Blue.  We stayed in Mt. Morris Saturday night with some friends of Thea and took route 26 as far as Peoria in the early a.m. - beautiful drive along the river!

Still not sure about Kurt and Debbie - they left the park before us on Saturday afternoon.

Kurt and Debbi are fine - they posted in the Yahoo group. They'd also checked out Saturday morning so have everything.

Drbob, thanks for the concern, but I am sorry I couldn't make it. I had trouble like I said, and talking to family on the cell phone I guess ozone days were a dime a dozen.I was wondering, like Surfnut, if there are any pics hanging out there. right now is the time to plan for next year's gathering. maybe get Surfnut south of the border. p.s. For my info: When do ozone days taper off. I belive in the old days they were called temperture inversions.
