Thermostat?
« on: October 11, 2015, 07:02:16 PM »

There are several threads on this but I didn't see any covering the OEM differences.
Now that I have a 1991 and 1994 NA saved on most online parts stores I seen a difference on thermostats.

My 1991 calls for the 195° as OEM and the 1994 calls for the 180° as OEM.

Does anyone know why? Is it the way the computer is programmed? Extra protection from overheating? Is there a TSB on this?

I'm gonna stick the 180° one in the 94 but I'd sure like to know why the change. Thanks!

As far as I am aware it should be 195 on all years.

180 does not let the car warm up properly.

That was Advance. Looking at RockAuto explains it better.

1991
170° Alternate
180° Alternate
192° Recommended OE
195° OE

1994
170° Alternate
180° OE
192° Recommended OE
195° Alternate

So it looks like 192° is the winner.
Stuff like that confuses Advance since they don't sell a 192°, lol. I'll just go with the 195° then. What's 3°? I'll stock up on a couple 192° for later while they still sell them.

Maybe in the deep south and summer desert you might run a 180°. She's a hot car and likes it hot with a fan running. :)

I didn't notice it before because it was hot outside. Now that it's cooler out the 1994 temp gauge is at half mast and fuel mileage took a nose dive. I gave her a complete tuneup but the thermostat must be stuck open or it doesn't have one. I'll fix that problem.
