Distributor O-ring
« on: June 13, 2015, 05:31:06 AM »

Also look to replace the distributor o-ring.
Sorry if this is a little side-tracked, but where would one acquire such a part? I was actually prepping for a valve cover gasket/engine electrical replacement job right now.

I have a universal o-ring kit from Harbor Freight, I think I'm using one of the larger ones from that kit.
Parts stores should be able to get them, though. If not for the Capri, have them look up a 91 Miata for the Cam Angle Sensor
There are also aftermarket Viton X-section seals made for the Miata that will also work for the Capri distributor.

Edit: Don't forget the 6x dabs of RTV silicone in the sharp corners when doing the valvecover gasket (on each side of the cam & distributor caps)

Doesn't NAPA sell individual rings based on size?

Well yeah, but that would mean pulling everything apart then hopping in another car and driving to go get it. I'd love to just have everything ready to go in my garage ahead of time, hahaha. Especially since today's a Sunday.

I think you can only get that oring with a head gasket set or full engine gasket set. You'll need them eventually so go ahead and stick a set on the shelf.

Rockauto sells a o-ring for the 323 called the distributor mounting gasket, it's FEL-PRO Part # 35608.

Definitely get on ebay and get the viton o ring. This is a major source of leaks on these motors.

Split into a new topic to keep the other thread on-topic.

Here's a link to a viton o-ring on eBay:

($4.95 shipped)

New Viton O-Ring. This size fits Mazda/Mitsubishi Cam Angle Sensors and Distributors, and is also used in some domestic cars to seal the thermostat housing. It is a direct replacement for the parts listed below, however unlike the factory parts or most generic parts store replacements that are made of BunaN/Nitrile Rubber, this one is made of Viton. Viton has a much higher temperature tolerance, and thus will normally last much longer than the standard part.

VITON 75D Black Size 222
High Temperature (400°F) & Chemical/Solvent Resistance

Dimensions: 0.125" T x 1.5" ID x 1.75" OD

EQUIVALENT PARTS

Mazda: 9954-10-3801

Mitsubishi:  MD619648

Fel-Pro:  35608 or 427

Victor Reinz:  72222

Dorman/Motor-Mite/O-Tite:  64222

There's enough info in the listing's description to find it locally too, it looks! :D

Shouldn't this be in the XR2 forum, though?  ;) Thanks for all the great info, I'll pick up one of those on my way to work today. Hopefully I'll have next Sunday off as well and can finally get this sorted out!

Hah! I wish I could merge the N/A and XR2 technical forums, I don't think we need separate ones anymore. With the software we're running on currently, that is not possible.

Got the Fel-pro o-ring on the way to work, plus some of that black RTV gasket maker junk. Have had a valve cover gasket kit since forever, plus got distributor cap, rotor, new wires (RC-ZE07) and spark plugs (BCPR7E-11). Am I missing anything for this particular job?

Sounds like you got it unless you want to tear the front apart to get to the camshaft gaskets. That's best saved for a timing belt or head job.

Mark your distributor orientation or be prepared to set timing. XR2 12°.
