Hey guys,

What type of oil do you put in a 91 non turbo 5 speed?

Also how do you fill it? is there a bolt on the side or from the top somewhere? If it's from the top how do you check for proper level?

OR even better, does anyone have manual online?

Thanks

Quality 90 weight ...  and yes guys the speedo hole is how you fill and check the level... the oil level should be over the plastic gear that drives the speedo ... thares a line just above the gear, and you dip the assembly for the speedo as a dipstick...

Thanks for the warning. Should I get SAE 90 gear oil or something like 75W-90.

I remember getting something that wasn't the exact spec for an old tercel, and the car wouldnt even shift.

Does anyone still make shift bushings/springs for these trans? Mine shifts great but the bushings are old/cracked.

bushings are available from Mazda.

Does it specify 90W in the manual?

I think that Mercon is what is recomended. Seeing as these cars are getting older and transmissions getting harder to find that to stray from the recomended lube could be a mistake waiting to happen.

ATF is like water...I wouldnt run that vicious crap in any of my vehicles... i run royal purple 80-90.. have in the zx2 and both capri trannys...

do you run autozone 10w30 in your engine??
i sure as hell dont.. i run synthetic

Royal purple or redline 80-90 is what id run...

oh, and the N/A tranny is far from rare... tons of ford and mazda vehicles use that tranny...

now the g-series cable tranny is getting hard to find..(xr2 and 323gt)

besides an awesome upgrade for an N/A car would be a g-series hydralic tranny.(escort/protege tranny).. axles would have to be hybrided..
but the tranny is much stronger...

75w-90 it is. I did find it extra stange that some folks recomended ATF!!! Really? I've never heard of that for a manual gearbox.

Does all of the fluid, gearbox and diff, come out of the one bolt at the bottom?

yep, that one bolt at the bottom. Also if you take the speedo cable and gear out of the top it will drop the oil faster.
O and i believe you need around 3.2 L or so of oil for the NA gearbox.
