I'm forgetful sometimes(most times) and I tend to leave my headlights on whenever I use them in the daytime. I know the obvious answer is to not use them in the daytime, but certain situations call for it. I would like to build a noisemaker of some kind that will remind me to turn off my lights when I take the key out of the ignition. Is there some kind of relay I can use that is an open circuit when power is applied and a closed circuit when the power is cut off? You know, backwards from a normal relay. I'd prefer not to have the headlights themselves pass through a relay of any kind- if possible

Many relays have both Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) terminals on them. The relay commonly used for aftermarket fog lights has both terminals. Hella, Bosch and others make them, and they are available at most auto parts stores. They usually have terminal numbers 30, 85, 86, 87 and 87a on them, and many have circuit diagrams printed on the side or top. There are some that have two NO output terminals, but you want one with a NO and a NC terminal.

I found something that could be used, if you do not want to go through all the wiring. The item is called "LIGHTS-ON ALARM" on the JC Whitney Web-site. They have all kinds of little cool stuff for your car. Alarm beeps until you turn your lights off. Mounts with double-sided tape. Approx. 1" L x 5/8" W x 1/2" H.

Mine has something installed that beeps if I leave the headlamps on with the key off. The guy who owned my car did all sorts of cool electrical stuff to it. I'm glad he installed the headlamp reminder, several times it's saved me. He also wired the fog lamps as DRLs and I can have the fog lamps on w/ the parking lamps. I like driving around like this. Sorry I can't tell you what he did, but I'll beat the Capri Meet in Indiana, if you want to check out my heap.
