wire n plug for lighted rear view mirrir
« on: October 27, 2014, 11:26:34 PM »

Hi all, with days getting dark I decided to install a rear view mirror with lights that I bought long ago. There was no wire harness so I soldered 3 wires to the short tail, wrapped in tape and ran down door post, under door trim to fuse box area. I have looked through my service manual and find no help in how to connect the wires for power. Is there a plug I can get?, or maybe piggyback on another part's power cable?
Has anyone connected one of these for power? I drive a 91 xr2.   Thanks

My memory says that the 1991 Capris did not have lighted mirrors.  The socket in the fuse box has no wires going to it, so you would have to tap into existing wires.

If I'm right, blue wires with red stripes in the fuse area is 12 volts to use.  Black wires are ground.  Red wires with blue stripes is the courtesy light wire.

If I'm wrong...nevermind!

I've added lighted mirror to one of my early build 91s. The wiring behind the fuse panel was there, in my case.

OK... never mind.  I have never seen a 91 with a lighted mirror, non of mine had them, and all my 93's and 94's have them.  I accept the full of s*** award for today!!!

I see only two wires in the socket but there are three coming off mirror. So is adding this mirror un-do-able?

Thanks

Third wire would be ground, connects right behind that red wire in the picture...Chris

I used a chassis ground, instead of running a 3rd wire. The other wires are constant power, and then a line connected to the courtesy lights. You can switch on the mirror's lights as needed, but they also come on when the door is opened. You can pick up these connections elsewhere if you don't feel like digging all the way up in there

The oem harness is about 69 inches long end to end. The connector by the mirror is 1/2" long by 3/16" wide, and gets pointy on the top. The other end (inside measurements, not to the outside of the plastic housing) is 3/4" wide by 1/2" high.

Take careful note. It's the 2nd connector, not the one on the outside of that box, but the one towards the middle... It looks the same, but there's no wires attached to the outside one.
