Folks,

What radiator fans are you using to replace our old fans when they die?

Either a junkyard or Russ@RooSport replacement, or a Flex-A-Lite

Not trying to knock russ, but seriously give rock a shot once in a while, you'll be surprised by the coverage lists for the 323.

Worse case scenario you transfer just the motor over.  Plain Motor new runs about $35 from them less shipping.

Are our fans, push or pull, and do you know what size fans the stock fans are?

All fans mounted behind the radiator are pull types.

I found out it isn't the fan, it is either the wiring, fuse, or relay.  When I connect the fan directly to the battery, it runs great.  When I disconnect the temp lead on the thermostat housing, the fan still doesn't run.  When I remove the "cooling fuse" the fan still doesn't come on.

Any ideas?

I'd check/replace the relay - it's down behind the d/s headlight, I believe.

Have you checked all the fuses including those under the dash? Check for power at the relay too.

Check the wiring to the fan...

1) disconnect the connector to the cooling fan relay, should be 4 wires, yellow, black, green/red, yellow/green.
2) Put a test wire between the yellow/green and black pins of the connector, turn ignition on.
2a) Fan on verifies the fan power wiring, you probably have a bad relay
2b) Fan off means wiring or voltage issues
2b1) Ignition off. Remove the test wire. Use ohm-meter to verify relay connector black wire has continuity to ground - open means damaged wire or connector or ground connection
2b2) Use ohm-meter to verify relay connector yellow/green wire has continuity to cooling fan connector yellow/green wire - open means damaged wire or connector
2b3) Use voltmeter to verify cooling fan connector yellow wire has 12 volts when ignition is on - 0 volts means damaged wire, bad fuse,

If all this testing passes, and if you disconnect the wire to the temperature switch, and the fan does not come on, then the relay must be bad.  Sometimes relays will click and still be bad internally

Yeah, I used to write electronic test procedures for a living for military avionics systems, I could easily make this a 3 page manual ;)

I replaced the relay, and it seems to have been the problem.

I had to get the cooling fan relay for a 1991-1996 Ford Escort (1.9L).  I got it at autozone, and the part number is 20453.
