picked it up of a neighbor last summer for $500 a base model 5spd with exactly 100,000 miles on it. had to put window regulator on drivers side and a passenger side window (my bad!!) and drove it all last summer. the clear coat was peeling something fierce, so I clear coated the hood and top of doors with a rattle can. it looked good but a buddy said "I bet we could repaint that car for $150". challenge accepted.... started in March sanding and sanding and sanding, neighbor also gave me new fenders to replace the damaged ones on the car, and fixed both rear quarters due to rust. the car was wrecked and one point and had a LOT of scratches and dings in the front end. also built the tonneau cover which totally changed the look of the car.I cut out the stock upper and lower grills and made wire mesh inserts to replace them, also added fog lights to it. I have NEVER done ANY body work before this car and my buddy has painted 1 car and that was 30 years ago!!! the paint is summit racing acrylic urethane Ultra blue pearl the wheels were painted with past- dip gunmetal grey. the car looks better in person than the pics and it still needs buffed and polished but that will have to wait (just had back surgery) had to put exhaust on it used a Thrush turbo muffler (sounds great), and have been enjoying it for the last 2 weeks. what a fun little car and a great fun way to get into body work and painting ( never want to do it again ;D) I have around $1,500 into it now and it is a blast to drive.

WOW! What a nice, nice looking car. I HATE body work, it is work, work, work, but you have a real looker as a result...
What material did you make the tonneau from? I suggest making removable plugs for the top cutouts, pop them out and store them when the top is up, makes it look much more finished. Rather than squares, you could make a decorative piece to fit the corners...
Keep updates coming, I like it!...Chris

Nice work! I painted my GTXR2 back in 2009, it's not something I care to repeat again anytime soon. Bodywork is not my forte.
I'm really digging the color, it reminds me of the "Marine Blue" offered in 93? I think? Is it single stage paint or did you do bc/cc?

The car looks good I like the grill mods

Thanks you guys for the great feedback. the tonneau material is micarta. a local supply shop had them I have a total of $30.00 in it. we thought of adding the removable pockets but knew that my wife either wouldn't use them or lose them. We had to literally flip a coin for the color, my wife anted this color and I wanted a dark burgundy. the paint was a single stage paint acrylic urethane from Summit Racing ( its only 30mins from here) $79 a gal. we screwed up the first time we painted (had a TON of orange peel, forgot to add reducer),and had to wet sand it with 400 grit and reshoot the next weekend( then on last coat the lid on the spray gun wanted tite enough and got a couple of drops of paint on the tonneau) but still only had $250 in all the paint including primer. this whole project was an effort to learn body work (I'm a pretty good mechanic) and do this as cheaply as possible. ( wife thought this was my car!! surprised her when it was all done, handed her the keys and asked her if she wanted to drive HER car) Everyone seems to like the front grills around here also. my neighbor who I bought it from actually asked to buy it back!!! wife told him NO she loves the car
this is my other car that hasn't been driven much in the last few years due to back problems, did everything to the car except paint and roll cage myself(I did help a buddy with it though)

Nice! I'd always favor solid color.

Car looks great! It came a long way from when you got it, the hard work looks like it paid off!

my neighbor that I bought this car from found some pics from when he bought it 9 years ago...I WISH it looked this good when I bought it. Being daily driven every day in northeast Ohio put a beating on this car... clear coat was gone on the hood, truck lid and tops of doors, the front fenders were rotted out on the bottom and the rear quarters were rotted out in front of both wheel wells... the front bumper was hit and damaged

You've done a phenomenal job with the 91. I have a 91 that wandered down here from northern Ohio and I was feeling pretty good about my effort to get black plasti-dip on the bumpers! Where did you find the grill material? Also, the trunk rack is a nice touch - did you do that too? (I think a dark burgandy or dark hunter green color would look amazing on these cars). Nicely done!

the grill was just cheap wire mesh from autozone that I painted black. had to made 2 L brakets and attached them to the stock bolt holes for the factory grill, the lower grill used gutter guard clip to attach it to the car. the trunk is the stock luggage rack paint semi gloss black.I REALLY REALLY wanted a dark burgundy but a best of 3 coin toss decided it would be Ultra blue pearl mettalic
