Boost N/A capri
« on: October 03, 2013, 02:20:37 PM »

I have a 91 N/A capri, it has 94000 original miles on it and I can't sell it cause nobody wants it. So I wanna do something to it. I wanna either boost it, or swap the motor out with a more known motor. I was thinking a Zx2 or something. If I were to boost it, what should I do about the internals? And how hard would a Zx2 motor be? I was also thinking the DOHC 1.6 VTEC. (160 hp). Before anybody says anything, anything could be done. I'm leaning towards boosting just cause it's a low mileage motor. When I was thinking of boosting it I thought why don't I just get an XR2. But to find one cheap with 94000 miles will be hard to do. So I figured since I have one right now, just boost the one I have. Plus it's a good learning experience for me. Feedback would be cool. Thanks.

The thread Tony linked to there will point out what you'll need to boost it using stock XR2 parts. If you want to piece together your own kit that would work too but there's not much out there, and the shortcomings of the NA drivetrain are listed there as well.

A Zetec swap would be pretty cool it shouldn't be too hard to cram in there. They used a similar transmission to the XR2 so you should be able to come up with some sort of hybrid axles.

Honda? The engine would end up on the wrong side of the engine bay :P Personally I would not get behind such a swap, but hey to each their own!

You want a potent, relatively easy swap? Grab an NA BP from an escort GT or Protege. It'll bolt to your stock transmission, but more ideally swap to the matching trans it came with. Easiest would be using an XR2 transmission, though - less motor mount work.

And by the way, Welcome to TeamCapri!

Thanks guys, I didn't know that about the honda motor. I was thinking of more known motors and a VTEC was the first one that popped into my mind. But whatever is the easiest swap would be the way to go for me. Just something to give me alil more. Oomph. But thanks again for the info guys.

As far as ease of swaps, an XR2 conversion is about as easy as it gets. You can even use your stock longblock as long as you don't go too crazy with the boost.

The BP swap is a little more involved, but still easy in the grand scheme of things.

There's a lot of Variable Timing motors out there, Honda has the VTEC. Like I said their engines are on the opposite side compared to ours, and crossing platforms always leads to complications. Finding an axle combo or hubs to put the power down would be extremely difficult, and custom axles are $$$$$$

A good number of us here are in search of that extra OOMPH you're in the right place to find it!

What would the MAZDASPEED protege motor be like? How would that fit? Or should I just forget about that one? I drive a mazdaspeed protege right now and the Protege was mentioned so I was wondering.

You have a BJ chassis I think?  I'm talking the BG chassis Protege specifically the ones with a 1.8L DOHC "BP" engine, it's the "big brother" to the Capri's 1.6L

The MSP, does that have the 2.3L turbo? You could probably make that fit with a big enough shoe-horn! Get out the tape measure! hah.

The MSP has the 2.0T. 170 hp. I wish it had the 2.3. And I was thinking, whether I do the ZETEC or the BP id probably still wanna boost it. On YouTube I saw a Zx2 put down I think 300 horse, that'd be awesome numbers to see!! ANYWAYS, Since the motor would be out of the car, I could just build the motor up alil. And I'm not talking like 20 psi either. I'm thinking more like 10 or max 15. I'm not building this into a race car. Just something snappy that would surprise people. But what would worry me about the zx2 motor. Is that it seems the tranny gives out on them... I had one and it gave out on me at 80xxx miles.... Not sure about the BP motor.. Never read up on them.
