Title: 91 capri wont start non-turbo 1.6
Post by: kcurrier on November 07, 2010, 08:15:00 AM
hello, bought a non-running 91 capri off an old man, who let it sit for 5 years, i put a new fuel pump in and 4 injectors, new cap, rotor, plugs and wires, getting spark and gas into cyl's. just cranks and cranks, starting fuild wont even start it. timing looks ok, #1 cyl at tdc and rotor very close to #1 plug on cap, tried moving dis around a little when starting nothing seems to change, it must be something simple, can you use timing light when engine not running only cranking? tied replacing the plugs a 2nd time (gap .040) to make sure it wasnt getting to wet. any help would be great!! thank you. kevin c.

Obviously it's NOT getting spark, starting fluid always works on these cars if the car is within spec.  Double check grounds near the thermostat, and check voltages to the coil.  A timing light or spark tester will also confirm that there's no spark to the plugs.

Have you tried a compression check?  The Capri I got had all the exhaust valves burnt out of it and would only show 15psi of compression on the gauge.

Autoparts stores will lend you the compression check tool at no cost.

Thanks for all your help, I'm getting spark from the coil, cap and out the plugs, j tried each one. Getting gas out of filter and through new injectors, I set the spark plugs outside the cylinder hole and all 4 cylinders shot flame out. I may not be getting enough fuel pressure from the new fuel pump because I don't hear it pressizing the fuel line, but gas comes out line when cranking only, not when you turn the key forward. Yes Russ I work at sage products near Thornton's but it was not me he tagged. I will let you know soon if I need more help with ecm. Thanks for offering that's very nice. Kevin

That's just how capri's work, nobody has a clue why they did it like that.  They don't prime until cranking, so they stumble a bit to start.  Double check fuel-pressure by teeing into it near the filter.

Check the compression and timing. If you have fuel and spark then all you are missing is compression. Unless the spark is at the wrong time.

My 91 na won't start either, and it apparently needs some 7-pin module under the console cover. Any idea as to what that might be, y'all?

How did you come to a conclusion it needs a 7 pin module?

The cars computer is behind the center console below the heater core. I believe it's more than 7 pins. The ignition module is mounted on the distributor.

First you have to determine if you have no spark or no fuel and go from there.

The only modules under the console are for the airbag, and those won't keep your car from starting.

What diagnostic work have you done? Help us help you!

-Does the tach jump when cranking?
-If yes, is there spark at the plugs?
-Will it start on starting fluid?

What changed recently? Has it sat all winter? What did it do before it quit!?!

well, I know it wasn't the ecm. Now that I think about it it probably was the airbag computer. I had sold it a while back to a friend in need, and now I can't find one.

Assume I'm not an idiot and that it has correct timing, spark, and fuel, but haven't tested fuel pressure. It was sucking junkyard gas, so I will d Chase that next. It's 150 miles away, so my time is limited to weekends of convenience.

These cars are incredibly sensitive to old gas, so see if a few gallons of fresh gas help.
I spent a lot (an embarrassing number) of hours troubleshooting my GTXR2 after it sat, only to find it wouldn't fire on stale gas.
