Title: No power in my 91 NA Automatic
Post by: David Young on May 10, 2010, 06:46:00 AM
Hey there everyone.  I am stumped with my loss of power.  Mine starts up and idles fine.  It is a little slow in pulling out, but on the level its fine.  Once I start up a grade, (just a slight one will do), it acts as if I have a tow chain attached to the rear.  I just installed a new distributor cap and rotor, and news plugs and wires.  I thought it might be the cat conv. but onces removed...didn't notice anything; just a change inexhaust sound.  Again, if cruising on the highway at 55 mph, and I step it down, it will shift and go.  But as soon as I come to any up hill climb or even slight grade; it begins to loose power.  I am very frustrated.  Any ideas?

David

Good morning all.  I finally found out what was wrong with my 91 NA, (with no power).  The problem was in the timing belt.  Both cams were in time; however they were not in time with the crank.  It was 4 teeth off.  After they reset the belt and checked everything out; it ran great.  Another thing was that it didn't idle above 750 rpms while hot...and it "hick upped" about every 20 seconds while sitting and idling.  Now it idles around 800 rpms, wihout out the "hick up"; and really has a lot of power.  I was getting discouraged.  My daughter and I went for a ride yesterday; it was a very noticable difference.  The only thing that I can think of is that someone tried to change the belt and really didn't know what they were doing.  It was like that when I bought it.  If the guy wasn't such a nimrod, I would call him and tell him what was wrong.  Now time to install the new top and away we go.
