squealy blower motor
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:37:00 AM »

wondering if anyone has any ideas for a squeaky/squealy blower motor?

got my car running again, turned on the blower motor and it sounds like a family of mice being mutilated in the cage

thought it was leaves from the car sitting so long.

tore it all down, blew out the vents and vacuumed.

dropped the blower motor and cleaned out the cage.

reassembled everything. still squeals.

i dropped the motor again and started testing.

if the motor is in installed position, ie: cage on top, blower on bottom, it squeals. LOUD.

if i reverse and put cage on bottom, motor on top, the squeal goes away.

i took the cage off. still squeals.

took the motor apart and removed the armature from the magnets, thinking it might be some dirt in there causing the problems.

cleaned the magnets. cleaned the armature.

put it all back together.. still squeals.

i THINK it's the bearing that the top of the armature rides in, because the squeal goes away if i flip it upside down.

can't see any way to get to the bearing, without pull the armature from the brushes, and i always screw that up when is tart messing with brushes.

think maybe i can squirt some lubricant in there? or am i just gonna have to replace the blower?

it works great, and on all four speeds. it's just louder than hell like i'm murdering mice.

if i can get this and the cooling fan relay taken care of, i might actually be able to drive my car again.

i'll address the windows later...  :(

I had this issue, I squirted a bit of lube in there and it went away. Replacement motors are available if you're inclined to replace it

I'll go ahead and try some lube first. It was working fine back in august before sitting.

Worst case ill get one from dude. I sent him a message about that and a used relay for the blower.

I'll see what a little lube does for it.

Hate to keep buying parts if I can avoid it.
