been a while. help with cooling fan relay
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:33:00 AM »

hey guys, i haven't been here in quite a while. my car has been sitting since august.

back in late july or august, i met up with russ and bought a distributor from him.

i was never able to get the car timed properly, so it just sat.

last week i finally broke down and took it into the shop... turns out, i had the timing set pretty well.... but i had accidently unplugged a few injectors or something. and the spark plugs needed replaced.

now, the car is running great.

kinda...

another issue i had, was the cooling fan relay had died. i never had any success finding one. so, when i took the car in, i had them fix that as well. since i already had the relay pulled, i just gave it to them.

well, i noticed yesterday, driving the car for the first time, i started to overheat. popped the hood. sure enough, they never put in a new relay. forgot about it.

i called, and they apologized for forgetting... and found one for me. FOR 69 DOLLARS !!!!!

and of course, they no longer have the original. they can't remember where they put it, but they think it probably got tossed.

so, with the relay removed... can i just do some jumping on the harness, and just make the fan run all the time? i've read where many of you just keep it running whenever the car is on...

is that something i can do with the existing harness that was plugged into the relay?

or do i need to run all new wires to make that happen?

i just can't see spending 69 bucks for a relay.

i'm out working on the car now, my blower sounds like its packed full of leaves.. but any advice on this cooling fan would sure be great.

thanks !!

jay

$70 is ridiculous. They should replace it for free on account of they almost cost you a headgasket/engine.

If you can do a little wiring, buy a universal automotive relay and wire it in. It does not have to be an original relay, there's nothing special about it, other than it will plug straight in. Russ might have an OE replacement cheaper

You could wire the fan to run with the key on, if you really wanted to. Putting in a different relay would be a similar amount of work and would work like it's supposed to.

After I removed my AC, my fan would stay on all the time. After over a year of this I found the problem, the fan circuit is looped through the AC harness (now removed) so I jumped it. I was concerned that the fan would burn out prematurely from running all the time. Might not be that bad on it but I didn't want to continue to risk it
