Title: Leaking radiator - what else to replace?
Post by: 94daves on June 13, 2014, 02:59:38 PM
My radiator has started leaking, either at the top or the bottom.  Has anyone been able to repair the radiator (the Ford manual it says that it can be done, though the local shop says they can't get parts) or does everyone just replace it?

And if I replace the radiator, what else should I do for good preventative maintenance?  Water pump, etc.?

If you've got the plastic tanks, I wouldn't bother trying to repair. I wouldn't go as far as water pump, but a good coolant flush, thermostat, and new radiator hoses would be on my list personally

You can get new radiators no problem, Genesis also makes an all-aluminum radiator but they're not always in stock.

Great tip, thanks.  They are in stock on their website now - $89 plus shipping.  Perfect.

when i bought mine, i also had a coolant issue. the seller thought it was the radiator, but when we poured water in the system and started her up to get her ready for transpotation, i noticed it was leaking (as in: pouring out again) from behind the engine. it turned out that it was a small hose,  running from the intake manifold to the idle control unit. i replaced it (it was a real PITA to do the job), filled the system and let her run on idle till the fan kicked in. system is not leaking any more. but i think i'll replace the radiator cap (the rubbers seem to be gone a wee bit,  :o )

Yes! These small hoses are becoming an issue now, I've seen many problems with them between here & the facebook group in the last year or so. We can probably add them to a list for preventative maintenance

i replaced that hose with a piece of fuel hose (inner diameter: 8mm). mine had raptured so i tore it loose from the IAC-valve. but the other end, attached to the intake manifold, really took me 1.5 hrs to get loose.

this is what the hose looked like:

now i only need to replace the catalytic converter, in order to get through the test. but since the present cat is welded (...) to the exhaust, it will be kind of a challenge to have it replaced.
