The guy at O'Reilly's told me I needed a  Stant 45869    195* thermostat for my 1991 XR-2 engine so I got one but it doesn't fit inside the water pump.

The thermostat housing won't mate up to the water pump with the thermostat in place.  My engine didn't have a thermostat in it so I don't even know what the proper part looks like.








Can anyone tell me for sure what part number I need (or post a link to the proper part?)  I'm getting really tired of parts guys selling me the wrong parts!

Thermostat goes in the head mate, you're working with the pump inlet there. Have a look on the other side of the head under the distributor, you'll see it.

Of course, the thermostat doesn't go into the water pump.  Nice pics of you trying to fit it in there!  Just put it aside and concentrate on getting that pump back in, with your new timing belt, get her running and worry about that tstat later.  Looks like you do have the right one though, and you will need a new gasket with it when you install it..Chris
