How much is too much?
« on: April 29, 2010, 05:22:00 AM »

I'd like to make some improvements in my 91 XR2 but dont want to overspend.

I paid $1400 for the car. Solid as a rock but could use a fresh coat of paint and a few door dings removed etc.  I have a local body guy that does good work who is willing to paint, remove the dings, etc apply a base and clear coat for $1300. Would really make the car look like new.

I would additionally like to put a set of wheels and tires which is likely in the $700-800 range.

Anyway, looking at a total investment in the $3500 range if I were to make my improvements which is realistically about $1000 more than the car is worth.  I do enjoy the car and plan on keeping so there is some value that I need to contemplate there. I just hate to overinvest.

Any thoughts on such?

Well you have to look at it this way. What is the car worth to you. As for paint. Most shops will cut some of the price off if you prep it yourself. Sanding it down to be preped for painting takes off a nice chunk. A guy I know told me he would paint mine for 400 bucks if I preped it myself.

Always price around when it comes to body work. And make sure they do good work, you dont want someone who will paint it up but leave runs in the paint or have your paint peel because they didn't do a good job. Hell some places try to use old paint or frozen paint just to save money.

I don't think the resell value is high on capri's. But they are really unique and you don't see many if any around. And from the looks of things spend your money on how you want it as long as you don't think your overspending.

Because from the looks of alot of other cars on here there is no such thing as over spending. I don't know many people on here.. But look at rocketmans capri. Its one of a kind, I know hes invested alot of time and money into it,

Craigslist the rims...you can get a set with good tires for 300 easy

if you get 17s...they have to be 205/40/17

the only one that will fit in 17s

Only spend what you are comfortable with upgrading the car.  My girlfriend calls the Super-Roo the "$10,000 Capri". She'd kill me if she know she wasn't even close........  ;)

Some great points! Funny thing is, I bought the Capri as a basic commuter car. I also have a 2001 Yukon XL 2500 with an 8.1L that was my daily driver. Gets about 10mpg around town.

I figure the Capri will basically have paid for itself in saved fuel by the end of the summer!

at the post, mine was woth about $4000.00, since then... add another $1000.00. By the end of summer, lets get real, by the end of next winter, then the car will be pulling around 250 bhp, then it will be priceless!!

(my rims and tires were $950) but that is new prices.

Man, put as much as you want and can afford, but remember there are 12 step meetings for those of us who cant control the spending. I think its called Capri Anynomous, I have been pointed out the way.

Then ypou have guys like gost who find 94's laying around for $300???

I have had my Capri for 12 years now.  9 years ago I put almost 10K into it.  I get just as many whiplash victims today that I got 9 years ago.

The styling on the car is timeless.

Don't buy a car and fix it up expecting to make money.  Fix the car up because you enjoy the car, that way no matter what, you won't complain much when you think of how much time, money and effort you put into your car.
