turbo failure or dash Guage????

« on: Today at 10:37:31 AM »

Ok, ........OK
I decided last weekend to change my oil and filter after I poured sea foam in the crankcase to try eliminate some noisy lifters
While test driving it I noticed my psi Guage not working, also it seemed to be idling a little high.
So after I found a loose vacuum hose near the passenger fire wall, from changing my hard to reach oil filter, I thought it would fix my issue.
Nope!
I also temporarily disconnected another Vac hose from the brake booster and poured sea foam in it while the motor was running.
My question is would I notice allot of smoke if my turbo went out, and did I do more damage to it funneling seafoam through it.
Or should I continue hunting for a loose connection or Vac hose

Big smoke is a definite sign of turbo failure. Not a good thing.

That's what I thought,  but I don't see any smoke coming out.
That leads me to believe my gauge might not be working

To be fair, big smoke is also a sign of I-just-dumped-seafoam-into-a-running-engine, too. ;D

Isn't Seafoam deadly to most cars? Ive only ever heard of a handful of cars that didn't have horrible problems after using it.

Well after funneling  seafoam through it I have to say I don't hear those noisy lifters anymore.

there is a vacuum type thingy mounted on firewall kind of behind the throttle valve. that is the boost reader. i blew some air into both ports (with mouth, nothing high pressure...?) and shook it around again and it started working.

some people can hear the turbo spin up when driving, and can tell if it's working. i cannot hear it for some reason, even when I see the gauge boosting.

prob not the gague, unless you feel it driving diff or tons of smoke, prob not the turbo. my guess that little reader

edit:
someone replied to this a bit back with picture. see one on right in this topic:\

Thank you all for your advise.
Looks like I'll continue the hunt and as soon as i find the problem I'll post it.

Next time use a bit of acetone, like a 1/4 cup into the crankcase. Let it run a bit with some reving then dump the oil and refill with fresh. None of the seafoam after affects either. I have even heard of using ATF in the oil to free them up. Really the best way is to take them out, inspect each one and clean or replace.

I found it!
Looks like the Vac hose clamp was loose at the tee connection feeding into the pressure valve on the firewall. Those spring loaded clamps don't hold that we'll under pressure.  I should have known from past experience.
Never assume anything, is what my dad always says.
Now onto performance mods. .........
