Whats the best place to buy struts now?
« on: September 05, 2005, 02:39:00 PM »

Who has the best deal on tokico struts now? I don't suppose you can still get that really good deal on them? I'm finding them for about 350 for a complete set can you find them cheaper somewhere? Thanks ~wayne

Tokico still has their special clearance prices for the struts. $39 each, which is quite nice.  You'll find them on this page.

Even though it says that the prices are only good through March of this year, I just recently ordered mine and they had no problem honoring the price.  Just make sure you specify that the struts you are looking for are on the clearance/new page.

They'll be under the Mazda 323 label.  The listings are the fifth and sixth down under the overstock specials heading.

THANKS! That will save me a lot of dough. What should I use for springs? I want it to be super stiff. Should I use the H&R's? Oh and does anybody know if you have to realign anything dropping it that much? Thanks guys. ~wayne

any time you change out the struts/springs, I would suggest an alignment.

Will these work on XR2?  I see a lot of exceptions on these website like (exc. GTX), which I assume is the Mazda equivalent suspension of the XR2.

I see now that the answer to my first question is "yes".  How about these:
Any experience regarding replacement of the upper strut mounts?  My XR2 has 160k and I don't know what shape they'll be in when I get them apart.  Anyone with experience on how to inspect and what symptoms crop up?  Replacements run $25-30 each--ouch!

look for excessive cracks in the rubber, and when you have them apart, examine the strut bearings, make sure the turn without any gritty feeling. if they both pass the test, reuse them.

yeah they'll work. Gtx is an awd version of the 323 its not the suspension equivelent of an xr2.

N4S428 is right about the GTX, it is a AWD version 323. The front suspension is the same, but since the rear is also has drive wheels the rear struts are different. The Xr2 would be more comparible to the 323 GT if you had to pick one.

Thanks all for the input--much appreciated.
I'll check the mounts following your advice.
Tokico struts will arrive by Friday for $182.96, shipped to NorCal.  And they didn't even hang up on me!

Upper mounts looked okay, and I got the front struts installed.
BUT, at the rear of the car, the lower coil spring insulators (rubber strip that the bottom of the spring rests on) is toast on both sides.  I see Mid-county has these for $10 each (#SS21), but I'd love to find something locally (CA, Silicon Valley).  Anybody have luck finding these rubber pieces at dealerships, auto parts stores, etc?  Anybody know if there is a "universal" equivalent available that would fit?

Thanks in advance,
Dave
