Title: Headlight conversions
Post by: Snigalfriz on September 14, 2011, 06:15:00 AM
Has anyone converted to sealed beam projectors?

What are you thoughts?

What brand?

How much?

Where did you find them?

There are Hella H4 conversion lense kits that are very high quality but they're not projectors.

There's a whole bunch of kits listed if you google "4x6 Projector", a lot of them are very cheap though so I question the quality

I've had a long running project trying to mod full High/Low projectors in from another car, and making the headlights with a permanent "sleepy - eye" mod  (http://smile.gif)  Finding assemblies that will fit with the little space available is proving to be a challenge though

There is a capri that has ford contour headlights on it.  I'd say either that or a mark VII should have lights that don't require too much cutting.

My coworker took pictures of it when he saw it, apparently the guy is in PA and drives it often.  I'll see if he can send them if he has them.  I saw it up close once, it almost looks factory if I didn't have mine parked up the street.   (http://tongue.gif)

I was just looking at those lights on ebay. Looks good on the RX7.

Also remembering you, Rocket, had a picture of it placed on a capri.

There were my plans...

S13 Headlights, Go perfect with the current marker lights just a little bigger. Very easy swap a body friend of mine said.

here is a 1G eclipse with it done, where i got the idea because the front ends of both cars are really similar

I always thought a mark VIII or a contour would be a nicer fit, and they're a bit more common.

I kinda like the one posted from Thailand.
Get rid of the signal and side marker and maybe the front groove.
Looks something similar to this.

I like those. You guys said 4x6 and those would fit huh?

Anyways been thinking of going hid. Thats a real kit right? Everything needed. Op check em out if they are. I know hid kits are expensive. The bulbs go for 100 a pop at my work >.> this one comes with 2 6000k bulbs and the whole kit.

Anyone do the conversion? Any one not like it and why?

Antoinette has HIDs, and I love them (when they work). However, the kit appears to be a cheap one, and they weren't installed well (sorry, Anthony, but its true......). I will be upgrading them this winter, with better ballasts, and a proper wiring job.

Those appear to be the same, should just be replaceable with the H4666's in the car.  Just make sure you find somewhere safe to mount the resistor boxes.

Those might work, with minor modification, that inside tab seems to be the only part you'd have to change really.  And locking out the lift setup, obviously.  Just a matter of doing the job completely and disassembling the thing you just bought to get it painted to match.  Might need to get the quad taillights and round foglights to pull that all together though.  Does look slightly out of place on a boxy car like this.

I installed a set of H4 conversion projector lights last night.  I replaced the old socket with a new H4 socket.  I fit pretty well, It may require a little work to add the hid kit due to the potential additional depth of the hid bulb.  I am going to try and get it done this weekend.

The kit I used also has a halo and blue light, for affect.

The whole lid is going to need to be shaped/contoured to fit the Capri, It's a good start but I can guarantee it will need more than "minor" modification.

My friend had a rare set for a 2g Ford Probe that used Hella universal 90mm projectors. Didn't even come close to fitting:

I'm not a big fan of that style though, looks cobbled together IMO. But that's my opinion...lol. I'll try to get working on my projector conversion, the angles & geometry on these headlights are not easy to work with lol

I would like to be able to use projector driving lights in place of the pop ups and have the lenses follow the contour of the hood, but in looks like the hood may be to flat for that approach.  I am going to try and do a mock up to see.

I agree. Russ & I did some preliminary work on it, he had purchased a kit with Hella 90mm universal projectors, and IMO there just wasn't enough vertical clearance to make it work

That is what I thought, on visual inspection, but I may look for other options.

I think I am going to try and use the projectors from a 1999 or 2000 mercury cougar and fab them to fit into the stock housing.

I added hids to mine for both the headlights and the fog lights. They are sweet, but I think real projectors would be awesome.

Any thoughts?

I have a set of the Cougar projectors. I have some pics up here of them mocked up. They're a little too long to work easily, but you might find differently, as I'm trying to make the headlight only open 2-3". Permanent "sleepy eye" style

At the moment I have a set of projectors pulled from a 1993 Infinity J30, these are wider but shorter so it poses some of the same problems. Much nicer though, and already enclosed unlike the cougar's

What I'd love to see is quad headlights on a capri ala similar year Lotus Elan.

This is what I had come up with. I'm still working on it, though. Finding time has been the hard part.

The housing will be re-worked to fit the contours of our cars better. There will have to be some modifying of the header panel, though to make these work. Hopefully by Spring....

What housing are you using or is it a custom mold you came up with?

I would also like to cover the opening with lexan to protect the lenses.
