Headlamp motor repair
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:12:27 AM »

Hey folks - does anyone have a repair protocol for the headlamp motors they can share?  I have one side that won't flip up unless raised via the hand crank.

Thank ya'll so much!  Grant

This is the rotary switch inside that needs to be cleaned:

If the gear is stripped, well then you'll need to replace the motor.

Are the contacts in this picture clean or dirty? also, what about that grease? If it gets all wiped out and cleaned, what to replace it with?

Yeah, pull that big gear out and clean it out good and regrease. That old factory grease tends to turn into putty.

I use fine steel wool for final polishing, and water-resistant lubricant like white lithium grease, comes in a spray can.

If you are referring to the Rocketman pics, they actually show a fairly clean wheel and contacts, the dark looks like new grease...Chris

I used white lithium grease in the tube. We'll see which last the longest then we'll know. Lol

Got it off, seemed to go okay. chatter is down but still present. went from about 30 fast clicks to 2-3. Might be due to slowness in the other motor, or just normal... Not sure.

Grease was still soft underneath the gear. It wasn't hard, but could tell it was starting to putty around the spiral gear.... (what's that thing called?) so dug that out a bit...

I have to be more careful popping those ball joints out. they have a small nub in the center of the plastic i keep shearing off when I remove... not sure why.

I believe it's called a worm gear. Make sure the copper contacts are clean like rocketman posted. Lightly scuff up with some emory cloth or fine sandpaper.

JJ no need to pop those ball joints off, just pry the bar off the motor after removing the nut.  If you still have chatter then the contacts aren't clean enough, clean the copper disk til it looks new, and remember to clean the finger contacts also where they touch the disc...

Make sure you don't have hairs of steel wool floating around in the grease, that would cause weird conduction issues also... and if you haven't done both motors, then the other one could be causing this also...

Yeah, now I have no lights at all. switch up or whatever... the headlamp I cleaned just goes up and down with no sign of stopping. it's worked fine for a few days now this... ugh

As much as I'd like to believe it was the other causing it, I didn't touch it yet... so I think it seems unlikely.
